Twiggy – Rainbow Bridge

A very sweet 3-4 year old “runaway” from a breeding operation in North Alabama. At this time Twiggy is literally skin and bones with nipples hanging half way to the floor. It appears that she may have had a recent litter though her milk has dried up. She was picked up as a stray, sat 5 days at animal control and another 9 days boarding at a vet. I was shocked at her appearance when I got her eventhough she had been fed regularly for 14 days. It’s obvious she’s had multiple litters but this sweet girl has NO c-section scar. They made her free whelp her litters, her pelvis is so narrow I’m surprised she survived one litter. She is Heartworm negative. Has etropion with a left eye ulcer. We are allowing her to gain some weight and recover from her ordeal before proceeding with spay and entropion surgery.

Update:

8/28/09:  Twiggy is slowing gaining weight and confidence.  She was so emaciated on arrival we didn’t expect her to survive.  I was afraid to allow her to lay on a hard surface for fear a bone would erode through her skin.  I’m noticing a slow increase in muscle bulk, particularly in the chest area and hind legs.  Twiggy’s energy level has improved greatly, to the point where she “prances” across the yard.  We still have a few confidence issues to work on, that will come with time and feeling safe. She gets along well with every other dog in the house.  This little girl has beaten the odds and deserves all the comforts life has to offer.

Update:

Twiggy is slowly rebuilding muscle mass. Hoping she’ll become “fluffy” before the weather turns cold. Keeping my fingers crossed since she eats 4 1/2 cups of food a day plus treats.   Sweet little Twiggy is afraid of the dark and must have moral support and encouragement when she goes out at night.  Twiggy was also able to undergo vaccinations but must gain more weight before proceeding to spay.  Twiggy has horrible breath from dental disease and GEBR funds are not sufficient to cover routine dental care.  In fact, because of the number of dogs in our care requiring expensive medical and/or surgical treatments, we have been unable to afford dental care for any of our rescues.  We hope to be able to make dental care a regular part of our treatment plan in the future but at this time demodex mange, heartworms, ruptured eyes, ear infections, skin infections, spay/neuter and microchips must be our priority.  Would you please consider donating specifically to help defray the cost of Twiggy’s dental care.

Update:

She has won the title of Most Precious Dog in the World.  I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful this girl is.  She’s a gentle soul whose only goal is to please.  She will look up at you with big dreamy eyes that just make your heart melt.  Her perfect afternoon is spent on the couch, preferably with a loved one cuddled up next to her.  She’s never grumpy or intolerant.  She waits her turn and she is soft mouthed.  A true lady. Twiggy’s spay surgery was delayed because just as we got clearance to undergo surgery…she went into heat.  WHEW!!!!  that’s over after a long 6 weeks.  She scheduled for surgery next week.

Update:

Our surgery was a success.  Had a much needed dental cleaning and surprisingly didn’t have to have any extractions.  She’s recuperating on the couch at my home…a bomb couldn’t get her off the couch….well maybe food could.  She is a beautiful girl.  Have to see her in person to appreciate the total picture….stunning!  I am taking her off medical hold.  If you are interested in adopting and already have an application on file, please e-mail and let me know if you’re interested.  If you haven’t applied…time to send them in 🙂
