Sophie – Rainbow Bridge

Meet Sophie Sue, a  very petite (I’m talking tiny) 4 year old former breeder.  Sophie was sold to a family in Blairsville for breeding.  We don’t know how many litters she had before she was sold but we do know the last litter almost killed her.  She had a c-section, but only one pup survived.  BUT, Sophie almost didn’t survive.  Their vet said she should never be bred again.  Thankfully, the owner heeded the warning and made the call to GEBR. We applaud them for taking this step.  Apparently Sophie was sold to them as a good breeding dog but on further investigation, after she had to have an emergency C-Section, the family found out that Sophie’s old vet had advised against breeding her.  Thanks to her most recent owners, she will never have to endure that again.
She is heart-worm negative  and has been brought up to date on her vaccines.  She did have a reaction to one of the vaccines, so care will have to be taken in the future. Her owners reported eye issues, but on exam only appears to have cloudiness from corneal edema due to  poor care.  They have already improved significantly with proper cleaning.  After a few days of observation at the vets, I brought her home this evening for a spa treatment.  I cleaned 4 years of crud out of her tail pocket and nose rope.  We got rid of those nasty fleas bothering her hind end.  We finished up with a whitening shampoo and her white is almost white again.  She’s fresh and squeaky clean now, She tolerated the bath well but really put on a show after the bath was over.  She loves being clean!  After a round of cuddling, Sophie was worn out and ready for bed.

She is very sweet and seems to do well with other dogs, although this has been limited to date.  We will not directly expose her to other dogs until she is another week out from vaccines.  She will be going back to the vets on Monday for spay.  More clean Sophie pictures soon!!!

Update:

We call her Minnie Mouse.  Waddles around the house like she owns the place.  Her domain is the couch(I have no idea how this tiny girl can get up there) where she sits to oversee activities with her partner in crime, Charlotte(my bulldog).  She has a lovely doggy bed in my daughter’s room but doesn’t use it.  She prefers to straddle a large stuffed frog.  At every opportunity, she’s exploring the trash can or pulling out every single stuffed animal my daughter owns.  This little girl has a tremendous personality.  She hasn’t had any aggression issues and regularly spends her time with 3 other females…no need to worry about the others taking advantage of her, Charlotte has her back and will take out anyone who even thinks they can give Sophie a hard time. Sophie is terribly afraid of Kong for some reason (who knows what went on between those 2 in the past).  I thought I was doing a good thing by letting them see each other,  familiar face…..Sophie ran away and submissively urinated while growling, totally out of character for Minnie Mouse.

Update:

Dr. Ross tried to spay Sophie but came upon significant adhesions from the uterus to the kidney.  It was too dangerous to perform this surgery without serious risk of blood loss and the procedure was discontinued.  We will have to make arrangements to have Sophie spayed at a large teaching hospital where support services are readily available.  These adhesions were the reason Sophie nearly died during her most recent pregnancy.  As the uterus got larger during the pregnancy, it was pulling down on the kidney compromising it’s blood supply and could have ultimately pulled the entire kidney from it’s artery and vein…..She would have bled to death in a matter of moments.

Update:

Will continue on medical hold. She is going to need entropion surgery and spay at UGA but now we are having GI issues.

Update:

Sweet Sophie girl has a uterine infection that is going to make a difficult spay even more difficult. We have gotten a referral to a Surgical Specialty Center for her procedure….$2000.00(that’s with a discount). Please consider helping us raise the money for her surgery. We have taken in several dogs recently with major medical and surgical problems leading to vet costs that we didn’t expect. It is becoming difficult for us to handle even routine care at this point.

Update:

Sophie came through her spay with flying colors.  It was difficult to keep this girl down after she came home.  She’s been acting more like a puppy and obviously feels much better.  She also had a little nose and palate work done during the surgery.  Nest step is taking care of  lower lid entropion.  Her cloudy eyes are much improved but may not ever be completely clear since the entropion went untreated for so long.  No fear, she has wonderful eye site.
