LaRue – Adoption Pending

6/27/24 – Please welcome LaRue! LaRue was picked up as a stray and turned over to us by the shelter. She is already spayed and doesn’t appear to need any other surgery. We are treating an ear infection and a minor skin infection. She has been diagnosed with dry eye and will be on prescription eye meds for life.

9/15/24 – LaRue has had a slight head tilt since coming to rescue so we saw the neurologist today for a consult.  She has no other clinical signs of neurological issues but we wanted to have her checked out just to be safe.  It is hard to say exactly what is causing the head tilt but it is not causing her any issues and her bloodwork looks great so the neurologist is not concerned at this time.

Neurologic examination
Mentation: BAR, appropriate to surroundings
Cranial nerves: Within normal limits other than R head tilt
Gait: Ambulatory without evident paresis, ataxia, or lameness.
Posture: Normal
Postural reactions: Paw placement normal in bilateral thoracic limbs and bilateral PL
Spinal reflexes: Normal bilateral TL withdrawal. Normal bilateral PL withdrawal. Normal bilateral patellar.
Complete/normal perineal and cutaneous trunci
Palpation: Non-painful on spinal palpation. Normal cervical range of motion
NEUROANATOMICAL LOCALISATION- R CN VIII- peripheral vestibular disease, suspect chronic

Comments: Larue’s neurological examination was most suspect for a peripheral vestibular disease (ie not affecting the central nervous system, but more so the nerves that are associated with balance near the middle/inner ear). An early central lesion (ie affecting the brainstem) cannot be ruled out without imaging, however this is thought to be much less likely given the examination and available history information. We performed lab work on Larue today to ensure this is normal, including a thyroid level as this can be responsible for balance disruption . This level, along with remaining lab work (CBC/Chemistry) was also unremarkable.
