2/4/21 – Please welcome Meet Rudy May! She was born on September 25th with a heart murmur. Last week, she saw a cardiologist and was diagnosed with severe pulmonic stenosis and tricuspid valve dysplasia. She will need to be on heart medication for an extended time, then she will see the cardiologist at UGA for a surgical consult. She was turned over to the rescue because her owners could not afford the surgery, she will need to have next month but they wanted her to get the care she needs. Without the surgery her life would be cut short but with the surgery we have a chance at giving her a long normal life.
3/9/21 –Rudy May had her cardiology consult at UGA today and will be having a balloon valvuloplasty tomorrow to treat her valvular pulmonic stenosis.
3/10/21 – Rudy May had her balloon valvuloplasty today. The surgery went well, and she should be able to head back to her foster home tomorrow.
3/11/21: Rudy May was released from the clinic today and is back at her foster home for recovery. Before being released she had a post surgery echocardiogram to quantify her post procedural transpulmonic pressure gradient. She has had a gradient reduction of approximately 38% based on pre-and post-op echocardiograms, and now her transpulmonic gradient is 77 mmHg on average with a range of (63-88mmHg). This is a great result that may continue to improve over time as the right ventricle reverse remodels and inflammation of her pulmonic valve decreases. However, it is also possible that her valve may re-stenose, meaning that the valve leaflets heal back together, becoming fused again. This is seen in approximately 10% of patients and is most likely to happen within the first 3 months following the procedure though late re-stenosis can occure. She will see the cardiologist again in three months for a recheck and annually for the rest of her life. She will also be on atenolol for the rest of her life primarily to decrease the strength of contraction, which may be beneficial for Rudy’s type of heart disease. It will also have the effect of decreasing heart rate, which gives the heart more time to relax.
