Atlas – December 6th, 2022

2/29/20: Please welcome Atlas! He joins us from Henry County Animal Services. He was picked up as a stray and when no one came looking for him he was able to join the rescue. He needs to be vaccinated and neutered. Unfortunately, he is heartworm positive and we will need treatment once he recovers from surgery. We are treating him for an upper respiratory infection. Once that clears up, we can move forward with his surgery.

3/5/20: Atlas has not been feeling great, so we did blood work and a few things were concerning. We decided to move forward with an ultrasound today. He kidneys do not look healthy on ultrasound. We are hopeful this is just because of pyelonephritis (infection). We are going to treat with antibiotics for six then repeat blood work and ultrasound.

3/10/20: Atlas had his neuter surgery today and all went well!

4/21/20:  Atlas had his repeat blood work and ultrasound and unfortunately things are looking worse for him. He appears to have been born with abnormal kidneys, versus kidneys that start failing over time. Because the kidneys didn’t form properly, they aren’t able to detoxify the body properly. Over time, the toxins build up. In regular kidney failure, the progression tends to be slower. With abnormal formation, the progression varies but for him it appears to be moving pretty quickly. He has a chronic illness that we cannot fix but there is an option that might (we don’t know for a fact without trying) give him more time. We honestly do not know how much time he has with or without the treatment. We are going to try a special diet, Hills Science Diet k/d, and medication, Azodyl.  The plan would be to try both for six weeks and repeat blood work.  If there is no slow down then we will likely discontinue both.  If they are helping to slow down the kidney failure then we will continue.  He will need repeat bloodwork every six weeks.  It is about a $280 per six week investment!  It will be an investment worth spending to give him as much time as we can.
