Delilah – Medical Hold

5/5/13: Please welcome Delilah. She is a four year old from the Humane Society in Knoxville, TN. At this time she is not spayed and we are not sure she will be able to be spayed because of her severe heart murmur. We will know more once Dr Ross exams her. She may need to see the cardiologist too. She does have a c-section scar so we know she has had babies. She has dry eye in her right eye. She is now up to date on her shots. She will spend two weeks in quarantine at Riverside Animal Hospital then move to her foster home.

She likes dogs and children but we do not know if she likes cats.

Thank you Diana for picking her up at the Humane Society and to Beth, Erin, Al, Aden and Shannon for helping with her transport!

5/5/13: Please welcome DiDi. She is a two year old owner surrender. She and her brother have been fighting so her owner thought it would be best to let us find her a new home. She was picking fights with her brother whenever he wanted human attention. She was jealous and not interested in sharing the spotlight. She and her brother Diesel are from the same parents but from a different litter.

She is spayed and up to date on her shots. She will not be placed in a home with other dogs. She is a bit too excited and strong to be with young children so she will only be placed in a home with older children and no children. She has not been exposed to cats.

Maizey – Medical Hold

5/4/13: We welcome Maizey (age 4-5) to our little club(although quite sizable at the moment). Maizey was seized by a local animal control last week after her owner refused to seek medical attention for a mammary tumor. A family member of the owner called animal control after noticing that Maizey was in dire need of medical attention and the owner become violent when he attempted to take her to the vet. You see. Maizey was purchased from craigslist by an obviously trouble women. Instead of seeking appropriate medical treatment, she placed a rubberband around the mammary tumor.

Fast forward 3 months, the tumor is necrotic, infected and had been infested with maggots. Maizey was seized and immediately taken to Eastside Medical Animal Center for treatment. The tumor was removed and the infection treated. Recently, Maizey’s ownership was transferred to rescue.

We picked her up yesterday morning and immediately transported to Dr. Rush. The incision is healing well without any signs of infection. Dr. Rush thought Maizey was in great condition after what she had been through and approved transfer to a foster home. She will recover and then return to Dr. Rush for Palate surgery and spay. Aside from poor tail pocket hygiene, she appears to be in good condition right now. We do not have results of pathology yet and will await their return before we begin any other treatment. She is heartworm negative and is now up to date on all vaccines.

She’s a big girl of 60 pounds and excitement causes a little humping activity, so we will not place her with a family with small children. She gets along with other dogs and is very very loving. She happens to be very beautiful as well!

Duke – Medical Hold

5/1/13: Meet Duke, a four year old owner surrender to the Columbus shelter. Duke was originally rescued from the shelter by a respected local all breed rescue. Upon finding out all of Duke’s medical issues they thought it best that Duke be cared for by a breed specific rescue and asked if we could take over Duke’s care. Duke was transported from Columbus this morning and is now resting comfortably with Dr. Ross. Right now, we know he has a soft tissue tumor on his front leg and another on his back. He also is heartworm positive. There is a possibility that there is also a knee injury that will have to be addressed.

He gets along well with other dogs and loves toys. More info to come.

Maxx – Medical Hold

4/29/13: Please welcome Maxx! He is a four year old owner surrender. Maxx has a laundry list of bullie issues! Including but limited too; allergies, eye issues (he may need entropian surgery), yeasty ears, bad knees and hips, and a cranky attitude at times. We are chalky up the cranky attitude to him not feeling his best but we will know more after we tend to his medical needs. He is getting checked out by Dr Rush and will be moved to a foster home after he gets a full exam and annual vaccinations. We have started him on grain free food and will do allergy testing.

Maxx is not a fan of other dogs. He has not been exposed to cats. He has grown up with a child but at this time we will not place him in a home with children.

Update 5/14/13: Maxx was moved from the vet to his foster home. He had upper and lower lid entropian surgery on both eyes on 5/6. He has severe dry eye that has been untreated for some time along with an eye infection. Both are causing his vision to be impaired. We began using tacrolimus for the dry eye and we have him on other eye drops for the time being to clear up the infection. We hope after some time his vision will start to get better. His eye lids are a bit swollen from surgery but that will go down over time. He will go back to see Dr Rush in a week to have his stitches removed. We have transitioned him onto Taste of the Wild and are starting to see good results. We will give it at least two months on this food before we decided weather or not we will need to do allergy testing.

He will be available for adoption after we have all of his medical needs taken care of.

Emmy – Medical Hold

4/26/13: Please welcome Emmy! She is a three year old stray from Spalding County Animal Control. She is doing her two weeks of mandatory isolation time at Riverside Animal Hospital now. We are also treating her for skin, ear and eye infection. Once her infections clear up she will be spayed and moved to her foster home.

We have not seen her around dogs, cats or children. We will update as we know more about her.

Paisley – Medical Hold

4/22/13: Please welcome Paisley. She is a four year old female, abandoned several months ago at a vets office where she sat languishing until a special new vet came to the office. Paisley is now safe in our care and resting at Dr. Rush’s office awaiting more thorough examination. On preliminary examination it appears that she has severe dry eye that is in serious need of treatment, possibly entropion (won’t be sure until we clear up the eyes a bit) and a severely infected tail. More information to come.

Update 4/26/13: Paisley had palate surgery and her tail amputated. She is recovering at Dr Rush’s and will move to her foster home as soon as she is released.

Update 5/11/13: Paisley was moved from the vet to her foster home. She is recovering from spay, palate and tail amputation surgery. She has severe dry eye in both eyes that has never been treated until now. Dr Rush wants to treat this for a few weeks then decide if she we need to move forward with entropian surgery.

She will not be available for adoption until we have all of her medical needs taken care of.

Phil – April 11, 2013

We lost a great boy today. Phil, a GEBR senior permanent foster, succumbed to heart failure this afternoon. Our hearts are broken and many tears have been shed. Phil is survived by his loving parents, Bill and Deb and his fur son, King.

Phil (10 years old) and his son, King came to GEBR several months ago as a bonded pair. Deb and Bill welcomed both of them into their home, ultimately adopting King and becoming permanent foster parents to Phil.

Deb and Bill, you made the last part of Phil’s life heaven on earth….THANK YOU!!! ♥

Brutus

4/7/13: Please welcome Brutus to GEBR! Brutus was found as a stray six months ago and has been with the family that found up until this weekend. They contacted us a few days ago about surrendering him to us. Brutus does not have a microchip.

He is with Dr Rush now and will have surgery tomorrow. He will be neutered, have a palate surgery, and have his eye removed and the eye socket closed. It appears that his globe ruptured a while ago and scar tissue filled in. He will also have his teeth cleaned, get all of his shots and get a microchip.

The family he was living did not have any dogs or cats, but said he met a few dogs and seemed fine with them. He has been around children and did fine with them too.

Dr Rush believes he is between five and six years old. He is a sweet boy and will paw at you for attention if you are not touching him!

Update 4/11/13: Brutus had a very long morning in surgery with Dr Rush. He had palate surgery, neuter and has what was left of his eye removed and had his eye socket closed.

Update 4/16/13: Brutus was able to leave Dr Rush’s today; he went to Stepany’s house to recover. He is a bit swollen but the swelling will go down over the next few days. He is enjoying some relaxing time on his Bully Blanket.

Update 4/19/13: Brutus is still enjoying some relaxing time on his Bully Blanket! The pain meds have made him very sleepy. He is still swollen and a little raspy but I can get he is feeling better. He is getting a check up next Friday and will have his stitches removed then. If all goes well at his check up he will be adopted next weekend.

Update 4/30/13: Brutus was adopted on Sunday! Congrats Shulte family!

Dotty – Medical Hold

Please welcome Dotty to GEBR. Dotty was found as a stray two and a half months ago. The family that found her took her to the vet for a heartworm test and had her scanned for a microchip. Unfortunately she did not have a chip but she was heartworm negative.

She appears to be a breeder dog. She has extremely saggy nipples and a c-section scar. She had a tail pocket infection when she was found but it has cleared up. She has an extreme cork screw tail that will require daily cleaning to avoid any further infection. We discovered last night that she is in heat.

We believe the family that found her would have kept her but she wasn’t getting along with all of the dogs in the house. She does not mind the small dogs but wanted to hump and dominate the larger dogs. She also wanted to chase the cat. This was causing fights and ultimately Dotty had to be kept separate from the other dogs.

She is with us now in a foster home with no other animal. She will go to the vet next week for a check up, shots and spay.

Dotty is three years old. We do not know if she likes children. She will only be placed in a home with small dogs and no cats. She will be available for adoption after she recovers from spay surgery.

Update 4/11/13: Dotty went to see Dr Ross today with plans to get spayed but she has a bad ear infection. We will treat with antibiotics and steroids for now and plan to spay her once the infection has cleared up.

Darla – Medical Hold

3/29/13: Please welcome Darla! Darla was found on the side of the road on Friday evening by our friends Troy and Tom. They immediately took Darla to the closest emergency vet for evaluation and called us on their way. Darla spent the evening there then Troy and Tom took her to Riverside Animal Hospital the next morning.

Darla is in “ruff shape”! She only weighs 29 pounds! She has severe dry eye and possible cataracts. She also has a skin, ear and tail pocket infection. Dr Ross started her on antibiotics on Saturday and will keep her for evaluation this week. We will know more in a few days about her condition and what, if any, surgeries are in her future.

On a good note, she is heartworm negative! Thank you Troy and Tom for caring enough to stop and help this little girl!

Update 4/15/13: Darla is still on antibiotics and steroids to clear up her horrible skin infection. Once her skin is looking better Dr Ross will be able to fullly examin the mass on her side and we will come up with a plan of action. Her eyes are already looking better with tacrolimus. She is a hungry little girl that will eat anything she can get in her mouth!

Update 5/16/13: Darla is doing well in her foster home. She is almost done with all of her prednisone. Once she is off of it for ten days she can be spayed and have her tumor evaluated.

She will be available for adoption after we have taken care of all of her medical needs.

Toby – Medical Hold

3/27/13: Please welcome Toby! Toby was dumped at the shelter by his owners because they did not want to address his medical issues. The shelter vet looked him over and found that he has bilateral thickened knees – previous cruciate tears, gingivitis, ulcerated gums, dermatitis (probably allergies) and lick granulomas on front legs.

He was transferred from the shelter to Riverside Animal Hospital yesterday by The Bully Blanket Lady Carol. He will spend two weeks in shelter quarantine and get double checked by Dr Ross. Once he is released he will see Dr Cross for a knee consultation. At this point we assume he will need to have surgery on both knees but we will know more after his consultation. For now we will address his obviously mouth and skin issues.

Carol reports that he a sweet boy and loves to wiggle! We do not know if he likes children, dogs or cats. We will update as we learn more about him. Toby is five years old.

Update 4/3/13: Toby will be neutered and have his teeth cleaned this week. He will move to a foster home next week after his shelter quarantine is up. He will see Dr Cross at GVS in a few weeks for a knee consultation.

Update 4/16/13: Toby was neutered last Monday and went to his foster home yesterday. He is such a happy boy that loves to wiggle and bark! He has a consultation with Dr Cross on 5/15 to have his knees evaluated. We will move forward with surgery then if needed.

Update 5/15/13: Toby had his consultation with Dr Cross. He has tares in both knees and arthritis in both elbows. He will have his first of two knee surgeries tomorrow; the other will happen in a two months. We will treat the arthritis with meds.

He will be available for adoption after he recovers from both knee surgeries.

Winston

3/13/13: Please welcome Winston to the group! Winston is 4 1/2 years old. His owners adopted him from a shelter in SC a little over a year ago. We are not sure how or why he ended up at the shelter but we do know once he was adopted he was well taken care of. He was treated for heartworms and parasites, neutered and got regular vet care. But recently his owners had to take new jobs and they no longer have time to give Winston all the attention he needs. But no worries because we can!

Winston just got his annual shots in January. He has a sensitive tummy and his owners have come to conclusion that Blue Buffalo (sensitive solution formula turkey and potato) works best for him. We will keep him on this food since he does well on it. He does have the typical bulldog allergy issues but does fine with Benedryl. He did experience some environmental allergies when he first moved back to GA but they were limited to a particular house. Since he has moved from that house he has not had any allergy flare ups. He does have some hair loss on his sides but he had his thyroid tested and everything checked out so it must just be alopecia.

He is getting checked out this morning by Dr Rush and will be going to his foster home this evening. Provided Dr Rush sees nothing that needs medical attention he will be ready for adoption soon.

He has been know to potty in the house. We are not sure yet if this is behavior or if he just has not been properly house broken. Lucky for us his foster mom Lindsay is going to get to the bottom of it. We may want to place him in a forever home where someone is home all day or at least most of the day. We will know more on this after Lindsay has time to asses the situation.

We are told he likes children, that he likes to chase cats and that he has never shown any aggression towards dogs.

Update 3/30/13: Winston has been adopted! He packed his bags and moved back to SC. So happy for this little guy and his new family! Thank you Fortner family for fostering him and thank you Robertson’s for welcoming him into your family.

Update 3/26/13: Winston is doing great in his foster home. No potty issues at all! He will be adopted this weekend.

Charity

3/12/13: Charity is a three year old female, surrendered by her owners to a rural shelter in Alabama because she “killed” a chihuahua. In temperment testing around other dogs, Charity didn’t bat an eye or seem fazed in the least. BUT, because of her prior ALLEGED issue, we are going to have to recommend that she not be placed in a home with small dogs.

The prior owners also reported that Charity had NEVER been to a vet, so we are starting at square one with her. We do not know her medical status at the moment and pray for a clean bill of health.

Charity is on the road right now, anxious to start her new princess life. You can see from the photos that she has very kind eyes but it appears as if her spirit has been broken. That’s our specialty healing broken heart and spoiling them rotten.

She is at Riverside Animal Hospital now in shelter quarantine for the next several days, while she is medically assessed.

Update 3/18/13: She is heartworm negative, thank goodness BUT she has every intestinal parasite known to man, eye infections, skin infection and ear infections. Riverside reports that she is terribly sweet and loves belly rubs.

Update 4/1/13: Charity went into heat last week but Dr Ross was able to spay her on Friday. She went to her foster home but is on strict rest for the next two weeks. Spay surgery while in heat is more involved then a regular spay surgery so it is important that she stay very calm and relaxed. Her eyes, ears and skin look good but she does need to gain a few pounds. She is extremely timid but we know she will open up over the next few weeks as she gets more comfortable with the “good life”.

Update 4/16/13: Charity is doing great in her foster home. She is was extremely timid and shy when she first got there but is coming out her shell more and more each day. Her infections have cleared up and she has recovered from her spay surgery.

Update 4/30/13: Charity was adopted on Saturday! Congrats Charity, Rick and Marleen!

Simon – Medical Hold

3/6/13: Meet Simon, a four month old puppy, we took to GVS with a liver problem. He is not doing well, undergoing evaluation right now. Hoping we can save him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is critically ill.

Simon had been previously evaluated (by his breeder) with blood work and was thought to have a liver shunt. No other work up was performed. After finding out how expensive surgical repair would be, she contacted rescue. In the last 12 hours his condition deteriorated considerably and when he was picked up today, he was taken directly to GVS.

We have gotten the worst possible news regarding his condition. Ultrasound demonstrated that he has multiple internal liver shunts. There is no surgical correction for this condition; complicating his case is that he has developed a condition called Portal hypertension (blood pressure is too high running through the liver), probably stealing blood from his intestines. There is a chance that if we got the hypertension under control, we could medically manage his liver shunts, but prognosis is poor.

We have decided to begin treatment tonight to get him comfortable and reassess his response in the morning. His condition at this point is grave, but we have to at least try to give him a chance. I have asked GVS to not use extraordinary means to keep him alive during the night if God should call him to the bridge.

Thank you Valerie, Cheryl and Bonnie for getting this sweet boy to safety. Thank you Cheryl for making the decision to get him to GVS ASAP.

Stephanie was only able to spend a short time with him this evening for some heavy duty cuddling!! He had to get back on his IV fluids. On an up note, the tech’s did report that he ate dinner this evening. We’ll take that

Update 3/7/13 am: Just spoke with GVS. Our boy is doing much better this morning. Ate well and went potty this morning. A bit more alert as well. Hoping we can bring him home soon. (possibly tomorrow). He is on special food, lactulose and now metronidazole. We’ll be starting him on Milk Thistle as well when he gets home.

Update 3/7/13 pm: Simon is doing very well today; he looks perfect on the outside but has a terrible problem in his liver. Liver shunts can be treated with surgery if they are external. Internal liver shunts can now also be treated but there is no surgical treatment for multiple internal liver shunts; this is the condition effecting Simon. This condition is medically treatable for a short time but ultimately will lead to his death (in months). We can only pray that between now and that awful day a new technique will become available to save this baby’s life.

Update 3/8/13: Simon was able to leave GVS to go to his foster home. He scheduled to visit UGA on the 19th. We will be met by the internal medicine vet, a radiologist and the surgeon. He will undergo another ultrasound first, then possibly more specific radiographic tests to assess the extent of the shunts. If something can be done, and he is stable at that time, we will proceed with whatever treatment is deemed necessary, or we will make arrangements to take him to wherever he needs to go for more cutting edge treatment.

If he should become sick before that date he will be admitted immediately, stabilized and the work up performed.

Thanks to some wonderful supporters of GEBR, there have been phone calls made all over the US today, consults obtained from many (even one from the top of a ski slope in Utah) all concluded that we needed more information before any final decisions or prognosis was made.

Update 3/12/13: Our sick little baby boy is a SPITFIRE. We were proud of the progress he made after 24 hours at GVS, but he’s doing even better now. Barking, whining, demanding attention, playing and then (to everyone’s delight) sleeping peacefully.

Update 3/20/13: Simon has been at UGA since yesterday and underwent another ultrasound, along with a CT scan today. Things are looking promising from an x-ray standpoint but there appears to be some type of underlying liver disease, the extent of which is still up in the air. There will be a meeting of the minds tomorrow to discuss all the findings and make recommendations. Will possibly need a liver biopsy before we will know for sure that he can undergo any procedures to correct the shunt.

Update 3/21/13: Simon is a candidate for Percutaneous transvenous coil embolization of portosystemic shunts. He will have to wait until he is six months old to have the surgery. He will be going to NYC to have the surgery.

Update 3/23/13: Simon got his Bully Blanket this past weekend! He is doing great! He is responding well to the medicines and getting stronger each day.

We were originally told that he had an internal shunt with portal hypertension and multiple acquired shunts in the left abdomen. They said he was not a candidate for a coil. Basically told to feed him the protein free food and take the multiple medication until he began to fail. Only treatment was medical.

After an extensive work up at UGA he has only an internal shunt. No portal hypertension and no acquired shunts so he is a candidate for the coil procedure. All vets at UGA and in NY agree that he is the perfect candidate for the procedure. He and Stepany will travel to NYC in early May so that he can have the surgery.

Update 5/16/13: Simon had his surgery in NYC on Wednesday and has made his way back to GA and is now at his new foster home. He had 12 coils put into the shunt that will hopefully close it off over the next month. He will have blood work done in a month so Dr Weiss can evaluate the success of the coils. Until then he will remain on all of his meds and prescription food.

If his blood work looks good then we will begin the wean him off one of his meds. If he does well with this then we will wean him off the other. If he continues to do well we will transition him from prescription food to Taste of the Wild. Once he has grown and gained weight he will be neutered.

But if his blood work does not come back normal we will come up with a new plan. He may have to have additional coils added or remain on meds. For now he is enjoying life and growing bigger and stronger each day.

I picked up Simon from his foster home in Conyers on Monday evening. He and Amanda spent the night at my house and we got on the road at 6.30am on Tuesday. Around 8pm that night we arrived at my mothers in PA. The weather was bad so the trip took longer than expected. Simon did great for the entire ride! The next morning we left PA at 6am and drove to NY for Simon’s 9.30am appt. After meeting with Dr Weisse and Dr Nunley it was decided that Simon would have surgery later that day. Of course the rain followed us to NY but Amanda and I had our GEBR umbrellas to keep us dry! Simon had surgery around and 2.30pm and was then moved to ICU for the night.

He did great overnight and was moved out of ICA around 10am on Thursday. We were able to visit him then! He had some diarrhea and was a little out of it when we got there so Dr Weisse suggested we take him outside for some fresh air. The fresh air helped and by the time we got back into the hospital room he was crawling all over us and chewing our fingers.

He spent Thursday night at the hospital and was released around noon on Friday. Our friend Michelle who lives in NY came to the hospital to meet Simon. Then we got back in Wally Wagon and drove to my mothers in PA. We spend the evening there then got on the road the next day around 11am and drove to our friends house in NC. Simon enjoyed meeting Cristi, Roger, Hershey, Deuce and Yogi. He had another great night. The following afternoon we headed back to GA. I took Simon to his new foster home where he met his new bullie foster sister Georgia and his foster parents Michelle and Brian. He has settled in nicely and is enjoying his new life.

It was a long week but worth it! Dr Weisse, Dr Nunley and the entire staff that we met at The Animal Medical Center were fantastic. They made us feel comfortable with everything and they took great care of Simon. I’m told he spent most of his stay at the hospital in people’s arms and not in a crate.

Thank you Donna Gastinger (my mom) and the Satterfield’s for allowing us to stay with you. When I originally made plans to do this trip I was planning to do it alone. I have done the drive to PA alone many times and it does get kind of boring! When Amanda offered to come along I was thrilled; it made the drive and caring for Simon a lot easier. So thank you Amanda for coming with me. And to everyone that has donated to Simon’s care appreciate all of you for making this possible. 3/3/13: Meet Hope. Hope was posted as free to good owner yesterday. Many of us tried to contact the owner to get her into rescue, without success. A family in TN was able to get in touch with him and picked her up this morning. After a few hours, realizing that she was going to need more care than they could reasonably give, rescue was contacted. Hope is safe with us tonight, the first night she will have slept inside for five months!

Update 3/4/13: She is heartworm negative, no intestinal parasites. Heartworms are the biggest hurdle, glad she caught a break there. She also has an AKC microchip, but no one bothered to register the chip she is pure bred English Bulldog, not Olde English Bulldogge as the former owner had posted.

Update 3/12/13: Hope was spayed yesterday and was moved to her foster home today. She has two foster brothers, Duke Chumlee. She is getting along great with both of them. Thank you Greta and Nate for opening your home to Hope. I know she is excited to be sleeping inside and not chained up in the back yard.

Dr Ross estimates Hope to be between 12-18 months old. We have not seen her around children or cats. She seems to be fine with other dogs.

Update 5/5/13: Hope was adopted on Sunday! Congrats Hope and Carlan family!

Thank you to her foster parents Greta and Nate forgiving her a place to live indoors and for teaching her about toys and love.

2/15/13: Please welcome Duncan to GEBR. He is ten months old and up to date on his shots. His family relocated to Ca and did not take any of the family pets. We took him to Dr Rush for neuter and palate surgery. He was also treated for a parasite. He was living with a five year old boy (child) and a seven year old male lab. He is currently with two young children and a one year old female bullie. He gets along with the all of them! We have not seen around cats. Duncan is sweet, playful and has puppy energy.

Duncan was adopted this weekend! He packed his bags and moved to Florida with Jessica and Mike. Congrats Duncan, Jessica and Mike!

2/23/13: Meet Lewis, a two year old emergency surrender this morning because of a bowel obstruction; the owner could not afford surgery. He is at GVS at this very moment being evaluated and will most likely go to surgery within the next few hours. More info to come as it becomes available to us. 2/24/13: Lewis was able to eat a little today without vomiting, his energy has improved but still no bowel movement. Was hard to get him to stay still for a photo, but this was a brief moment of rest. Abdomen is not swollen and he is not in pain, so will continue to monitor. As is well for now but all will feel better after a CODE BROWN.

Update 2/26/13: Lewis he is out of surgery. The results are not straight. First off, Lewis was a very sick boy and it is surprising that he was so comfortable and medically stable, but fortunately we did wait until today because Dr. Duvall was able to do it.

Apparently Lewis swallowed a long thin and SHARP piece of plastic. It initially lodged into the intestine closest to his stomach, injuring the intestine wall but not completely perforating. Then it traveled farther into the small intestine, lodging and releasing, finally becoming stuck in another portion of the small intestine and nearly perforating a portion of that section. Dr. Duvall was able to remove both areas and reconnect the intestines.

The bad news is that one of the ducts that drains the pancreas had to be removed as well, because of the damage. We have a very sick boy on our hands and the potential to get even sicker if he develops pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a very real possibility because the work had to be done in the vicinity of the pancreas (which the pancreas does not like, a very temperamental organ) and on top of that, one of it’s drainage ducts is removed, again making the pancreas angry.
So now, besides the usual post operative risks we have to watch out for, there is a very real possibility that he will develop pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is treated with supportive care only (there isn’t a pill to cure it) but carries a very guarded prognosis, many do not survive. He will be monitored closely at GVS. There may also be long term effects to the pancreas from removing one of it’s drainage ducts, but that’s a bridge we will cross later.

We have contacted his former owners, explained the situation and asked them to visit with Lewis while he is recovering. We think it will help him in the recovery process to be close to the people he is bonded with. He knows us, knows we are kind to him but he doesn’t have that “love” for us that he had with his family. We want to do everything possible to give him the will to pull through this.

3/1/13: Lewis took a turn for the worst and crossed to the rainbow bridge.

2/8/13: Meet Leila (LEE la) a five year old emergency surrender due to neglect. Leila was initially rescued from a puppymill in horrible condition. She had a loving home for a short time but then Daddy had to leave the home. While Dad was gone, Mom allowed her physical condition to deteriorate, sometimes not even feeding her, not giving her the medicine and especially supplements that she needed to stay healthy. Leila’s father contacted us and we took Leila in immediately. Thank you Carol for picking her up and taking her to see Dr. Rush. She will spend a few days with Dr. Rush getting checked out and starting all the necessary medicines she needs to get healthy.

Leila has a serious skin infection, cherry eye and is very underweight. We will be working on getting her cleaned up and looking good as new again. She is reportedly a very sweet girl who gets along with other dogs.

Update 2/12/13: Leila went to her foster home. Once her skin infection clears and she is at a healthy weight she will have cherry eye surgery. Once that is complete and she fully recovers she will be ready for adoption.

Update 3/25/13: Leila went to see Dr Rush for a check up on her skin and cherry eye surgery. Unfortinely he discovered that she has a mammary tumor and mass 2-3 inch in her colon. She is seeing the specialist, Dr. Winkler, at GVS on Thursday. We will know more after her appointment.

Update 3/29/13: Leila had surgery to remove the mammary mass, the tumor in her colon, and her cherry eye. She was released from GVS on Saturday morning and went back to her foster home. She goes back in two weeks to have her stitches removed and we should have the results of the biopsies by then. We will have her skin and allergy issues evaluated at that time.

Our little buddy Oscar passed away on January 23, 2013. It came as quite a shock, we discovered he had cancer and there wasn’t anything we could do for him. We adopted Oscar when he was almost a year old and were lucky enough to have him in our lives for 10 years. He loved being around people, cruising in the car, playing on the beach and he loved helping me bake his treats! Our Oscar will be loved and remembered forever.

Chop – January 22, 2013

Sadness touched the bulldog nation on Jan 22 when Chop (Porkchop, GEBR) went to the rainbow bridge. Chop joined GEBR in May 2012 and was adopted by Ron and Sonja shortly after. He was just recently diagnosed with cancer. Please keep Ron and Sonja in your thoughts and prayers, it’s been a rough two years for their family. We are so glad that Chop got to spend his last nine months knowing what it was like to be loved and adored.

Faith – Medical Hold

1/16/13: Meet Faith a 5-6 year old stray from Knoxville, TN. We have agreed to take her into our rescue and with the help of Mari DeCuir and Smokey Mountain Bulldog Rescue, were able to get her pulled and to the vet for treatment of skin infections, ear infections, bad teeth and bilateral cherry eye. She underwent dental and cherry eye surgery today and is doing well. Poor Faith has obviously been used in an irresponsible breeding operation and most likely dumped when she developed too many medical issues to be bred again. Probably NEVER ONCE took her to a vet; NEVER ONCE showed her any love and then showed her the greatest disrespect by dumping her to fend for herself. According to vet reports, she is very sweet and has lots of energy. Her heart and lungs sound good and she is heartworm negative. Faith has also been spayed and is now up to date on shots. Update 1/27/13: Faith is boarding for the moment, quarantine from being in the shelter. But yesterday, one of her cherry eyes recurred (they were fixed last week in TN). She will be undergoing repair before she is transferred to her foster home. She is other wise doing well.

Update 2/2/13: Faith had her cherry eye surgery and was moved to her foster home. She and her foster sister Maggie are getting along great. Faith is very curious in the cats; she is chasing them all around the house. She still has a pretty bad yeast infection but we are treating that with antibiotics. We think her cherry stitch may have popped; she is going to see Dr Ross today to get it checked out.

Update 2/5/13: Faith’s stitch popped and her cherry eye is back. She is getting steroid drops for the next 10 days to help the size of the cherry eye to decrease. She will have to have it repaired again in a few weeks.

Update 3/7/13: Faith went to see Dr Ross today in hopes of having cherry eye surgery but her skin infection is still pretty bad. We will treat with steroids and evaluate in a few weeks.

Update 3/30/13: Faith went to see Dr Ross for a check up on her skin and allergies. We decided to do some allergy testing. We should have the results in a few weeks. In the meantime she is on more antibiotics and steroids. We have postponed her cherry eye surgery until after allergy season.

She will be cleared for adoption once all of her medical issues have been addressed.

1/10/13: Meet Fred, a young male stray rescued from a high kill shelter in North Georgia. He underwent vet evaluation today and neuter this afternoon. Unfortunately, he is heartworm positive and will need treatment as soon as he has recovered from neuter. From all reports, he is a sweet little wiggle butt who loves attention and is starving for love. He appears to be on the thin side so we’ll focus on fattening him up while he is at the vet waiting for heartworm treatment. Since Fred will be coming from a shelter, he will have to stay in quarantine for 2 weeks, but during that time he will be preparing to start the treatment. GEBR is unusual in that we keep our dogs, undergoing heartworm treatment, at the vet for the entire 21 day recovery period. Extreme , but well worth ensuring that our dogs have the best possible chance for a good outcome after a procedure that can be riddled with complications.

He is now was neutered and up to date on his shots. The vet in Dalton aged him at 18 months. He weighs 51 pounds. It appears that he likes children.

Update 1/17/13: Fred started his heartworm treatment. He will be finished and moved to his foster home on 2/7/13.

Update 2/9/13: Fred finished his heartworm treatment and went to his foster home. He is very excited to be done with his treatment! He and his new foster sister Luna are still getting to know each other. Fred is starved for attention and needs some help with his manners. His foster parents are letting him adjust to the good life but also trying to give him some structure. And some food…he needs to gave a few pounds!

Update 2/23/13: Great news for Fred…he has been adopted! He went for a meet and greet on Saturday afternoon and of course everyone fell in love with him. Including his new big brother Bogart! Congrats to Fred, Bogart, Lawson and Linda!

Blanche – Medical Hold

1/7/12: Meet Blanche, a four year old female rescued from a breeding operation in South Carolina. Thank you Melissa Digusto Brown for making contact with the breeder and getting this girl to safety. Blanche’s (formerly Chubby Butt)only purpose in life was breeding but wasn’t doing a great job of that apparently. No puppies, no money coming in. Fortunately, the breeder was willing to give her a better life. After spending the weekend in Augusta, Blanche made the trip to ATL this morning and is now resting at Riverside. We don’t have much medical information to share at this time, poor little girl was so nervous. Allowing her to calm down over night, before we start the evaluation. We do know that she has skin issues and is very itchy. She also has a respiratory infection. When she’s ready, this little girl will need a quiet home with someone willing to slowly introduce her to life experiences. Welcome to the good life baby girl!!!

Update 1/8/12: Dr. Ross was only able to do a partial exam today because of Miss Thangs anxiety level. The anxiety coupled with her respiratory infection made the anxiety even worse. They put her on antibiotics to treat the lung infection (which will also treat any skin infections she may have) and will wait for a couple of days before they stress her further by drawing blood, heartworm test and skin scrape. We are going to take it slow.

Update 1/9/12: Things got a little worse for our scared sweet girl today. Melissa had noticed an unusual vaginal discharge when she got her, she was reassured by the “breeder” that she was just going into heat. Melissa commented that the…e discharge was a bit different than what she is used too. On initial and quick examination, Dr. Ross thought that she had a vaginitis. Today, Miss Blanche didn’t seem to be feeling very well and Dr. Ross sent off blood work…this demonstrated a elevated white blood cell count (indicating infection), higher than would be expected with a respiratory infection. On more thorough exam, Blanche has an infection in her uterus called pyometra. The only reason Blanche is not dead right now is because there was a small enough opening in her uterus to allow the infection to drain a bit, Open Pyometra. Closed pyometra, if not recognized quickly, is fatal. In either case, the condition is a surgical emergency. This entire picture is complicated by her respiratory infection and skin infection, making surgery more dangerous. We must proceed with surgery at this point. Please keep Blanche in your thoughts and prayers. With all the other issues going on, the surgery and her recovery is going to be difficult but we have to give her a shot at the good life, the alternative is not acceptable.

On a positive note…she is heartworm negative.

Update 1/10/12: She is recovering from spay, no big surprises and she was stable throughout the surgery. Still a bit sedated but medically doing well. Her respiratory status will be monitored closely. Now for the healing to begin!

Update 1/27/13: Blanche is doing well after spay and is feeling more comfortable in her surroundings. Unfortunately, the bacteria that was growing in her uterus was resistant to the antibiotics she was being given post op, therefore infected drainage continued. Resistant bacteria’s are a result of inappropriate treatment in the past. Since she was in a puppymill, she was probably randomly treated with antibiotics for various infections and never completely treated for any of them. We now have her on the correct antibiotic for the bacteria and she is feeling better and drainage is improving. She will be moved to her foster home this week for TLC, rehab and socialization.

Update 2/1/13: Blanche is slowly getting used to the good life in her foster home!

Update 2/9/13: Blanche went her foster offical home on Saturday. She did very well with the transition and is opening up more and more each day. She is very loving! She will go outside to go potty but runs right back into the house. In a few weeks we will have her palate evaluated and do surgery if necessary.

Update 4/3/13: Blanche continues to open up more and more each day. She is enjoying the “good life” in her foster home. Later this month we will have her palate evaluated and do surgery if necessary.

Update 4/15/13: Blanche has a lump in her neck that is an enlarged salivary gland with no indication of a cancer or tumor. Bloodwork and chest x-ray look good as well. She will have palate, nares and have her nostrils widened today.

Update 4/18/13: Blanche is still hospitalized because of some vomiting after the palat surgery causing increased swelling in her throat. Yesterday, she had a couple of episodes of difficulty breathing with excitement that resolved with oxygen and prednisone. During the night, she had another more severe episode that required a breathing tube to be placed. It was successfully removed this morning but then she had another problem early this morning. She will remain at UGA on steroids and sedatives to allow her to recover. They are prepared to place a temporary Tracheostomy tube if necessary. Please keep Blanche in your thoughts. She’s had such a rough life up to this point. We of course, will not accept anything less than success!

Blanche update: her respiratory condition deteriorated yesterday mainly because of the continued vomiting ( even on multiple medications) and fatigue from working so hard to breathe. At 5, they placed a temporary tracheostomy tube so she wouldn’t have to work so hard at breathing and allow some of the swelling and irritation from the vomiting to decrease. This morning, Blanche is breathing much… better, no vomiting and even got excited without having difficulty breathing.

1/4/12: Meet Charlie, a sweet 18 month old female owner surrender because their young child developed an allergy to dogs. Charlie is spayed, up to date on shots and appears to be well behaved. She will be available for adoption as soon as she is checked out by our vets.

Update 1/9/12: Charlie met a lot of bullies over the weekend and did great with all of them. She was showing a little water bowl aggression but that has faded. She is not a huge fan of steps but is getting more and more used to them as the days go by. She has a lot of energy and is very playful. Her foster mom Amanda is working on her manners; she likes to jump up on people. Her paws are brown but that should clear up when all of her old grain food is out of her system. She is being transitioned onto grain free Taste of the Wild, Pacific Stream. She is going to see Dr Harris on Friday for a check up and should be cleared for adoption then.

Update 1/12/13: Charlie has been adopted! Michelle came to the meet up on Saturday to meet Charlie and fell in love with her. Michelle already had an approved adoption application on file so we were able to move forward with the adoption later that day. Charlie has a new sister too! They also met at the meet up and as you can see from the photos; they hit it off! We are so happy for Charlie and Michelle!

12/20/12: Meet Vixen, a local stray that has recently found a safe haven with bulldog lovers. She has been staying with them for several days while they attempted to find her owner, instead of taking her to the shelter… no luck so far. She apparently hasn’t been getting along with the household dogs (don’t know details) and if GEBR couldn’t take her, she would be going to the pound on Friday. We don’t want that to happen, so tomorrow she will be joining our little society. We don’t have anymore details on her. She will be going directly to Riverside for medical evaluation. More details to follow. Update 12/21/12: Vixen got the once over by Dr. Ross today. She is heartwrom negative and was able to get shots. Her belly is saggy from several breedings and she’s fluffy from not stepping away from the dinner table often. Update 1/2/13: Vixen went to her foster home. She enjoying her human foster siblings. She needs to lose a few pounds before she can be spayed. She will have no problem losing weight while chasing them around the house.

Update 4/3/13: Vixen will be spayed on Friday and ready for adoption early next week. Vixen has a female bullie friend! We have not had her around male dogs. She still enjoys the children she lives with but she also enjoys her alone time. She does not go potty in the house but will pee on her blanket just about every night.

Update 4/20/13: Vixen has been adopted by the Hollis family! Congrats Vixen!

12/19/12: Meet Hilda, a senior girl dumped in a shelter in western Tennessee. Yes, it’s that giving time of the year!!! No worries, Hilda is going to have a wonderful Christmas and a Wonderful Life from this point on. Thank you to the Jordan family for pulling her from the shelter and temporarily fostering her until we can get her to Atlanta after the holiday.

She’s a sweet girl and is getting along well with the Jordan’s other dogs. Thank Goodness for caring people is distant places who are willing to help out a bullie in need. Thank you Mari DeCuir and the Jordan family. We are not sure about Hilda’s health at the moment but looks like she has dry eye and possibly some ear issues.

Update 12/20/12: Note from temporary foster mom: This girl has been horribly neglected. Vision and hearing is impaired right now. Skin infected along with probably intestinal worms. Nails are so long it is making it difficult to walk. Poor precious soul.

She will be spending the night in the hospital then getting a dental procedure tomorrow. He teeth are really bad. On antibiotics to make her feel better. Will give updates as they come in. We originally thought she had impaired vision, but doesn’t seem to stop her from judging height from the floor to the couch or floor to the bed. She likes those creature comforts.

Update 12/26/12: Note from Hilda’s temporary foster Mom: I cannot believe the difference in Hilda! She can see so much better!! She’s not running into anything, she’s roaming around the house, looking at us, and her eyes look ten times better already. She has ointment for her eyes, an antibiotic, and the other I think is for her skin, maybe a steroid. Her breath is much better but it still has a noticeable odor. She looks like she feels so much better and I think she’s elated that she can see again!

Update 1/5/12: Hilda is here! Thank you Cathy, Lindsey, Tracy and Andrea for getting her to Atlanta!

Hilda is tiny! She only weighs 35 pounds. She has a very small frame but can stand to gain a pound or two. She is getting along fine with her foster sister Maggie but apparently likes to bark if ever left alone in a room at night. Her foster parents are working on that and hopefully after a few more days of getting used to her surroundings it will stop. She is going for a check up on Friday with Dr Rush and should be cleared for adoption then.

Update 1/11/13: Hilda saw Dr Rush on Friday and got cleared for adoption! He would like her to gain 3-4 more pounds. She did test positve for dry in both eyes so we started her on tacrolimus. She will need these drops for the rest of her life.

Update 5/11/13; Hilda has been adopted! Congrats Hilda and Gayle!

Rudolph

12/14/12: Please welcome Rudolph to GEBR. After evaluation by the North Pole vet, it appears that Rudolph was not hit by a car as was first believed, he was ENTRAPPED for several hours to days. All of the tissue damage was from pressure and something very tight encircling his back leg. The soft tissue of his back leg and foot is in pretty bad shape. We sedated him and got x-rays to look at the hip, leg and foot for fractures. God only knows how long this sweet baby stuggled to free himself before he was able to hobble to relative safety.

Update 12/21/12: Had to put baby boy in a “cone of shame” to try and keep his mouth away from his wounds. He loves all the attention. He had a little stand off with a male dog in an adjacent run this afternoon, while he was getting some personal time. We had heard that he didn’t get along with other males. Time will tell, it could have been stress and the gate separating them.

Update 12/29/12: Rudolph is now putting full weight on his hind leg and the wounds are healing nicely. He will be neutered once his leg is fully healed.

Update 1/28/13: Rudolph was neutered and moved to his foster home. He is staying with the Angel, GEBR alum and her sister Kitty. Kitty can be a little cranky at times and got in Rudolph’s face last night a few times and he is not mind at all. We were very impressed with his behavior. But he was very interested in humping Angel! We are chalking that up to being extremely excited and newly neutered; so hopefully this behavior should stop over time. He does not like male dogs. He is four years old.

He is officially ready for adoption so send in your application if you are interested in making him a member of your family!

12/9/12: Please welcome Mimi! She and one of her siblings (a male boxer) were not getting along from time to time so her family thought it would be best to surrender her to us. She lived with two male dogs but only had issues with the boxer. She is spayed and up to date on her shots. She will see Dr Harris this weekend for a check up and if all goes well she will be cleared for adoption.

She met her foster parents and little human foster brother last night. She immediately fell in love with foster dad. She does have a female fur foster sister too. It was not love at first sight but we think they will get along fine once Mimi settles in. We do not know if she likes cats.

Update 12/12/12: Mimi and her foster sister Penny are playing now! She will be seeing Dr Harris this Saturday for a check up.

Update 12/25/12: Mimi’s check up with Dr Harris went well. She is cleared for adoption.

Update 12/28/12: Mimi began having intermittent vomiting the last few days progressing to diarrhea. A trip to Dr. Harris and x-rays demonstrated a possible colon blockage. An immediate trip to GVS and review of the films confirmed the diagnosis. She had surgery with Dr Ericksen to remove the blockage. She is doing fine now; back to her normal upbeat self! Thank you for the quick action foster mom and dad.

Update 1/21/13: Mimi was doing well for a while after her surgery but a little over a week ago she started peeing and pooping in her crate. We moved her from her foster home to Stephanie’s house so she could monitor the “pee and poop situation” and attempt to get her “regular” again. We had been adding stool softener to her food after her surgery to make sure things went smoothly. We have decided to put her back on the food she was eating before she came into rescue. She was showing signs of dehydration but is peeing way to much to be dehydrated; so she will be tested for a UTI today. If she has one we will begin treatment if not at least we can rule that out as a reason why she is peeing so much. Before her surgery she was perfectly house broken.

She did meet Chunk yesterday! They did not play but they did not fight either so that is a good sign.

Update 1/22/13: Mimi does have a UTI. We are treating with antibiotics for 30 days and will recheck then.

We would like to place Mimi in a home with another female since she has had some issues in the past with a male dog.

12/8/12: Please welcome Lucy Lou! She is a 5 1/2 year old spayed female that joined us this weekend because her family can no longer care for her. She is up to date on her shots and has been taken care of and vetted all of her life. She has had a few year infections recently but once she is on a grain free diet we suspect those will stop.

Dr Harris was able to examine her on Saturday before she went to her foster home. She has an ear infection, skin infection in between her toes and an infection on her nose. We are treating all three infections and hope they will be cleared up in a few weeks. She will see Dr Harris at that time for a follow up visit and if all is good she will be cleared for adoption.

She was an only dog all her life but likes other dogs. We do not know if she likes young children or cats.

Update 12/29/12: Lucy Lou had her follow up visit with Dr Harris. Her skin and nose infection are all cleared up and she is ready for her forever home.

Update 3/31/13: Lucy Lou has been adopted! Thank you Deb and Tom for taking care of her the past four months. Congrats Lucy Lou, Maureen, Ben and Taylor!

Dewey – Adoption Pending

12/2/12: Please welcome Dewey to GEBR! He is a four year old male that was surrendered to us.

Dewey was purchased as a puppy from a breeder in Europe by his original owner. Once he got to the US he ended up spending most of the time in a crate because his owner had five children and didn’t have time for him. Over that year a half he became a toy hoarder! Toys were all he had in his life to keep him company. When his original owner decided he needed to go she called her mother and told her she was going to drop him off at the pound!

Fortunately for Dewey she stepped up and took him into her home. He was been with her and her two other dogs ( a lapso and a collie) for the past two and a half years. Now it is time for her to move into assisted living and she can not take Dewey with her.

Aside from a few occasional spats with the lapso he gets along fine with other dogs. When Dewey would get too close the lapso he would attack Dewey and jump on his face. We are told Dewey was never the instigator and he would often back down. Neither of the other dogs dare to play with toys, it was understood by all that those were Dewey’s toys and no one else’s! If one of the other dogs happen to be playing with one of his toys while he wasn’t looking they would immediately put it down when they saw him coming.

Dewey was also friends with a kitten! He was grown up around children.

He was not happy when we went to the house to pick him up; he is not used to strangers coming into his home. He barked and growled for a while but after 30 minutes or so he completely calmed down. By the end of the visit he allowed us to sit near his crate and play with his toys. He is a sweet boy but very confused about all the change and new faces.

Dewey was up to date on his shots when we got him. He is currently being treated for an eye ulcer and tail pocket infection. He takes daily medication for environmental allergies. He has dry eye in both eyes and will require drops of the rest of his life. He may have to have knee surgery; we will have that evaluated at a later time. He was just neutered on Monday.

He will be moved to his foster home after a few days of temperment evaluation post surgery rest.

He will not be available for adoption until after we have his knee evaluated.

Update 12/15/12: Dewey saw Dr Rush for a recheck on his tail pocket infection. Unfortinely he got worse not better. We are treating with a different antibiotic now and are hoping for better results. If it does not improve then we will need to move forward with tail amputation.

Update 1/14/13: Dewey had tail amputation surgery today. He had a severe tail pocket infection that probably went untreated too long before he came to GEBR. We have been treating it since December 3rd with multiple antibiotics but we were unable to clear up the infection so that is why amputation was needed. He is feel much better once he recovers from surgery. He will spend a few days at the vet while he has drainage tubes and then he will head back to his foster home.

Update 1/26/13: Dewey got his stitches out and is recovering nicely from his tail amputation. The is now a question of a possible knee problem. We will have him evaluated by Dr. Cross but need to wait until he has fully recovered from his his infected tail amputation before any additional surgery can be done.

Update 4/22/13: Dewey had his knee surgery today.

Update 5/4/13: Dewey got his stitches out. He goes back to see Dr Cross in four weeks for x-rays and a check up and then he will be adopted by his foster family.

Butkus – November 27, 2012

Around 5pm on November 26th we were informed about Butkus and were very concerned that he may be suffering from serious medical issues. We knew rescue couldn’t wait if we were going to have the best possible outcome. Harold Heck a friend of the rescue dropped everything and drove two and a half hours to Valdosta, GA to pick him up. We made plans for him to spend the night with Harold; Carol Robertelli would go to Macon the following morning to pick him and take him to see Dr Rush at Dekalb Animal Hospital. Butkus was is horrible condition but held on through the night and until the following afternoon. Dr Rush immediately ran some test and it was confirmed that Butkus was is serve kidney failure. Sometimes our best efforts cannot overpower the obstacles that are thrown in our paths. Butkus knew he was loved the last moments is his life and we are grateful that we were at least able to give him that.

11/12/12: Meet Mia, a six year old owner surrender to a rural high kill shelter. The owners dropped Mia off this afternoon stating that they couldn’t afford her any longer and she had recently snapped at the children. Because she was an owner surrender to this small shelter, plans were to put her to sleep within hours. By a stroke of luck, her photo was posted on the shelters volunteer website. Fearing that she would indeed be put down, Joyce Keeton with English Bulldog Rescue of Georgia swooped in a claimed her, eventhough EBRG didn’t have room for her. At about the same time we were also made aware of Mia by one of our concerned facebook friends. We immediately contacted the shelter. By working together, we were able to get this sweet girl to safety with GEBR. Thank you for your help Cheryl and Joyce.

Mia is now resting on a big fluffy bed, with a full tummy but not before she got the full inspection. She probably has dry eye in both eye with impaired vision and loss of night vision. After cleaning out her eyes and putting in lubicating drops, she seems to be a bit more comfortable. One of her ears looks a bit red. Most concerning of all is a mass on her right front leg that seems to be red and very tender. She doesn’t have a spay scar. She is heartworm negative.

Mia is a sweet girl, a bit tentative at the moment but doesn’t look nearly as sad and depressed as she did in the shelter photo. She is very spry for 9 years old, jumping up on the couch but only when invited. No sign of food aggression or toy aggression. She is very gentle when taking food out of hands and has certainly enjoyed a new bone to gnawl on.

Mia has dry eye. She will be spayed next week and then ready for adoption.

Update 12/11/12: Mia was spayed today. She is now readt for adoption.

Update 5/11/13: Mia has been adopted!

Churchill

11/09/12: Please welcome Churchill to GEBR. He was a stray that made his way to the Halifax Humane Society in Daytona Beach, Florida. We were made aware of him on Tuesday and after a few phone calls and emails we had transport set up for him to join us on Friday. Thank you Ashley Powers, Leigh Clark and Shannon Tucker for getting Churchill from Daytona Beach to Atlanta!

Churchill was neutered and brought up-to-date on his shots at the humane society earlier this month. But he has a horrible respiratory infection, skin infection, untreated dry eye, and he is extremely underweight. He only weighs 48 pounds! You can see from the photos that his frame can carry much more weight than that. We removed at least a dozen ticks from his body. He also needs to have entropian surgery. We will treat his infections and get some weight on him before we can consider doing surgery.

He is currently in isolation so that he does not share any of his germs with other dogs. We are hopeful that his respiratory infection will clear up by the end of the week; and then he will be moved to his foster home.

He is frail, weak and moves pretty slow but he is sweet, happy and loves being loved on!

Update 11/13/2012: Churchill was seen by Dr. Rush yesterday. No more ticks thank goodness. Churchill does have dry eye, entropion and a skin infection. The most troubling issue right now is starvation. All of his fat has been used to keep him alive, then the body starts breaking down muscle…leading to death from starvation. Churchill has been starved to the point of muscle wasting; why he moves so slowly. Dr. Rush said he will need to gain 10 before we can even consider any treatment of his eyes. So for now, he is on cyclosporine eye ointment and antibiotics for his skin. He’ll be getting lots of treats over the coming weeks and when he’s at a proper weight, will have entropion surgery. He still has a cough but no more nasty snot all over his face.

Update 4/8/13: Churchill had entropian surgery on both upper eye lids on Friday along with a two teeth pulled and a cleaning. He was also adopted by his foster family on Sunday. The Webb’s also adopted Buster from GEBR last fall. Congrats Churchill, Buster, Tripp, James and Tiffany!

11/7/12: Meet Birdie, a three year old female purchased from craigslist after we learned that she was living in a garage and being a target for the older male bulldog in the home. A kind caring volunteer purchased Birdie on our behalf and transported her to Dr. Harris this morning for medical evaluation.

It is most likely that Birdie has never had vet care and most certainly hasn’t been on heartworm preventative. She will be getting the “once over” by Dr. Harris and then when medically stable, spayed. Birdie seems to be a sweet girl who only want love and attention. She is a little on the thin side and will eat as much food as you put in front of her very quickly. She’s an active girl who loves to jump and run. After testing has been done by Dr. Harris, we will have more information on her condition. When released, she already has a wonderful foster home waiting for her.

Update 11/12/12: Birdie was spayed yesterday and she is heartworm negative!

Update 11/25/12: Birdie has found herself a new Daddy! She was adopted by Ryan on Sunday. What a lucky little girl!

We know that she gets along with dogs and children; we do not know if she likes cats.

10/16/12: Meet Dane, a four year old owner surrender to Animal Control. It doesn’t appear that Dane was well cared for much of his life. We gather that he spent most of his life in the laundry room and ignored. BUT, he’s a sweetie and loving some attention.

His eyes are infected and probably has dry eye. His ears are crunchy and most likely chronically infected. His coat is in terrible shape with both bacterial and yeast infections. And his nails are WAY overgrown! He’s already begun antibiotics for the skin and coat. Had his ears and eyes cleaned and his nails trimmed for comfort.

For now, he has to be in isolation for 2 weeks because of his exposure to shelter virus and bacteria. During that time, we will work on the eyes ,ears and coat. When his skin has improved enough, we will proceed with neuter, dental and trim the nails back. Dane is heartworm negative.

His intake report says he gets along with dogs and children. Cats unknown.

Dane will remain on medical hold until after he is neutered.

Update 11/12/12: Dane is battling a severe yeast skin infection. Most of the dogs who come in with skin problems have both a bacterial infection and an underlaying yeast skin infection. We treat both at the same time, but sometimes the yeast is so bad that giving the antibiotics to clear the bacterial part of the infection makes the yeast infection worse. He also was having a difficult time tolerating the yeast medicine. We’ve got it worked out now and he is no longer on antibiotics and only being treated for yeast. Hopefully he can be neutered sometime this week.

Update 12/4/12: Dane was neutered this past Friday. He also had two teeth pulled; here was a lot of hair stuck in between his teeth and they became lose and rotten. He was moved to his foster home. He is very sweet and playful.

Update 12/27/12: Dane went to stay with the Dudek’s while his foster parents Emily and Aaron went out of town. It looks like he won’t be leaving! The Dudek’s adopted him! This is the third GEBR adoption for the Dudek’s! So happy for all of you!

10/14/12: Meet Phat Lou, one gorgeous boy!! He is a 7 year old owner surrender after his family began having difficulties in the current economy. Lou has been well cared for most of his life and was their cherished pet since he was 6 weeks old.

He made a visit to Dr. Rush this morning, was neutered, had palate surgery and is now UTD on shots. He is heartworm negative.

We know that Lou is good with other dogs and children; we do not know if he likes cats.

Update 11/10/12: Lou has been adopted by his foster parents Jonathan and Jenny!

Gia – September 14th, 2012

Sweet Gia left us for her journey to the rainbow bridge. She has been in rescue since May but had been plagued with multiple medical issues. She was never able to leave the vet hospital because of those problems. Her medical and neurologic condition deteriorated rapidly over her the last 48 hours despite treatment. She was scheduled to go to GVS for an MRI but was completely unable to stand and quickly became unresponsive. Dr. Ross had to walk her to the bridge. Preliminary results of her necropsy show that she had a large tumor on her brain.

We are devastated that we were never able to give her a chance to live the Princess life.

Gia was a five year old owner surrender to a Metro Atlanta animal shelter. Reason for surrender is unknown. Gia was a very sweet little girl who was recently vetted and spayed at the shelter before she joined our little society. She was very pleasant and happy when she got attention. Gia was having an extreamly hard time contolling her blatter. Dr Ross did some testing and x-rays but she was unable to find the cause.

9/12/12: Meet King, Phil’s son. King just turned 2 in June. He is a sweet and curious boy who doesn’t seem to meet a stranger. He has had good medical care up until recently and suffers with no chronic medical problems. He is now with Dr Rush getting evaluated for neuter and will have his palate evaluated at the same time.

He gets along with his father but has not had much interaction with other dogs, behavior with children and cats is unknown.

Update 9/18/12: Monday was a big day for King. He was neutered, he had palate surgery and he had some eye lashes plucked (that were poking into his eye balls). Surgery went well. He does have an ear infection that we are treating. He and his father Phil will be moved to a foster home together this afternoon.

We plan to place King in a permanent home with this father Phil.

Update 11/10/12: King and his father Phil have been adopted by their foster parents Deb & Bill!

9/12/12: Meet Phil a 10 year old owner surrender. Phil and his son, King were surrendered by his owner as he plans to enter assisted living. The family was in dire need of help finding these babies a safe home and called on GEBR.

Phil is surprisingly spry for his age, in good health and has had regular veterinary care throughout his life. He is now at Dr. Rush’s getting the once over to be sure nothing was missed.

Phil gets along with King but has not had much interaction with others. He has not been around children or cats.

Update 9/18/12: Phil had some very nasty teeth! Dr Rush thought it was a must to clean them! He was concerned that they were causing some other infections through out his body. Phil has been treated over the past few months for a skin infection near his butt and some ear infections. He is also suffering from a bladder infection. He is a bit overweight and needs to drop a few pounds. Yesterday Dr Rush pulled one rotten tooth, cleaned the others and neutered him. We were originally concerned with putting such an old guy under but for the most part he is healthy and Dr Rush thought he would do ok. There were no complications. He and his son King will be moved to a foster home together this afternoon.

We plan to place Phil in a permanent home with his son King.

9/11/12: Please welcome Opal! She will be joining us later this afternoon from the Humane Society in Knoxville, TN. Her “owners” dropped her off there becasue they did not want her any longer. She is two years old. She is currently being treated for kennel cough. Once that clears up she will be spayed. After she is spayed she will begin heartworm treatment. Poor girl has a long road ahead of her but we are glad she is here with us.

At this time we do not know if she likes dogs, cats or children.

Opal will not be available for adoption until she completes her heartworm treatment but we are accepting applications for her at this time.

Update 11/13/12: Angela and Brian brought their daughter Sierra to meet Opal last night. They told her they were going to a friends house for a “meeting”. Of course all the adults in the room knew that is was a meeting to see if Opal liked Sierra. And of course she did! Opal is such a sweet girl; she let Sierra love on her and play with her. It was love at first sight for everyone and Opal went home with the Reece’s. We are so happy for Opal, Angela, Brian and Sierra!

8/22/12: This is Andy! His owner dropped him off at the groomer and never went back to pick him up! The groomer was able to get in touch with him and had him turn Andy over to us.

Andy is a sweet boy, submissive. He gets along with other dogs and no problems with two younger children. What is interesting is that Andy seemed to have gotten regular vet care, the issue was that the owner was not so good on the follow through.

He has some skin issues, possibly demodex and needs to be neutered. He will be examined by Dr Rush at Deklab Animal Hospital tomorrow morning. Depending on how bad his skin issues are will determine if we neuter him on Friday or address his skin issues first. He also has dry eye and will need drops.

He is 6 years old. He likes dogs and kids. He is not to good with steps.

Thank you Tollie and Harold for getting this sweet boy to Atlanta!!!

Update 8/24/12: Andy is HW negative. He does not have mange but does have a skin infection with some hair loss. He has severe dry eye and scarring on his corneas. His ears are boney and very closed up from years of untreated ear infections. The only true way to correct this type of problem would be a total ear ablation surgery; which is very invasive and expensive. Andy is not the best candidate for the surgery because of his age and the fact they then do not seem to bother him. Plus the surgery would most likely cause total hearing loss. At the moment he has some hearing loss but it is not completely gone. We will keep his ears clean and watch for infection.

10/13/12: Andy has been adopted! He has packed his bags and moved to NC with his new best friend Tavian and his mom Macy. Congrats to all! And a big thank you to the Cates family for fostering him the past two months.

8/18/12: Welcome Edith to GEBR. Edith was a stray picked up at a N GA high kill shelter. If not for the concern of a shelter volunteer, rescue would have never known about her. Thank you Cheryl with EBRG for forwarding her information to us. GEBR and EBRG work together to help as many bulldogs as possible throughout the state.

Edith is aged at 8 by the shelter but looks a bit younger; Dr. Ross will be able to give us a more accurate age after she is in a little better physical condition. Shelter volunteers suspect she was a “dump” from the many puppy mills in that area. She received little medical care and was bred often….an incubator, really. Then dumped when she wasn’t “productive” any longer and becomes the taxpayers burden. But I must take this opportunity to say: a BARGAIN bulldog puppy came from a mother like this, who lived in a crate all her life, had no medical care and then dumped to die a horrific death. No human was ever kind to her, yet she doesn’t rip our faces off when we come to help and she has every right to!

She was transported from the shelter to Whitfield County Animal Hospital for shots and spay. Unfortunately, we found out that Edith is Heartworm positive. We always pray for the best but prepare for the worst.

She is now in quarantine at Riverside (shelter dogs must be in 2 week quarantine) while she has her eyes, skin and ears treated. During that time, she will begin Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream which will help her skin tremendously and pack on some pounds. When she has gained enough weight and her medical condition has stabilized, she will begin heartworm treatment. We also believe there may be an orthopedic issue that needs to be evaluated at some point.

Update 9/19/12: Edith has finished her HW treatment. She will be going to her foster home tomorrow!

Update 10/22/12: Edith has been adopted by her foster family! Congrats to Edith and the Downing family!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ireland family during this terrible time. Murphy, was called to the Rainbow Bridge. Murphy was adopted from Florida English Bulldog Rescue a little over a year ago. Shortly after adoption, she was diagnosed with a a serious medical condition. The Ireland family never gave up on her. The family did everything they could to give her the best possible care. Our hearts are with you Rebecca. Rest in Peace sweet girl.

Most times we are very happy when we can rescue a bulldog from neglectful or dangerous circumstances and place them in forever homes as happy, healthy pampered pets. Along with those good times, there are some so sad that it nearly brings us to our knees.

GEBR was contacted last month by a family in Alabama who was considering surrendering their 4.5 year old male because his owner was suffering from a serious and incurable illness. As his momma’s medical condition deteriorated, Lewey’s emotional health deteriorated. Every time mom was taken to the hospital, Lewey was having panic attacks, so bad that he was requiring medication for stress relief. Mom had become completely debilitated and the family was having a difficult time caring for her and taking care of Lewey’s emotional needs. After much soul searching they decided it would be best to re home Lewey into a more stable environment. This is not the usual owner surrender story…this family loved Lewey more than themselves. He was provided with the best possible care and was a much loved family member.

After much consultation and plan was formulated to get Lewey to Atlanta with as little stress as possible. A lot of thought was put into making this transition as seamless as possible. On 8/11, Lewey was transported by his family to the GA/AL line. He was then transported to his calm, quiet foster home with another bulldog to keep him company (he seemed to have less stress with another dog around), and a member of the foster family home much of the time to provide Lewey with a sense of security. Lewey did well. He tolerated the transport and the introduction to his foster home and new foster sister like a champ. He even felt comfortable enough to explore outside with his foster sister for a short time.

Foster dad left Lewey for a short period to pick up a treadmill they had purchased (Lewey’s only form of exercise since mom had fallen ill) to help make his transition even smoother. When foster dad arrived home a short time later, he found that Lewey had crossed the bridge.

Without going into too much detail, Lewey didn’t appear to have suffered. He simply laid down and went to sleep.

He was transported to UGA for a necropsy: preliminary results show that Lewey had a massively enlarged soft palate and a very small trachea. When he laid down, the palate flopped down over the trachea and blocked his airway, resulting in his death. There was no indication during activity that he had breathing issues and the family was unaware that he had any palate issues, eventhough he had 2 surgeries for other reasons since 2/2012.

Words simply cannot express the sorrow we feel for Lewey’s family, our hearts are with them during this tragic time.

We truly thought we were doing the right thing and are so very sorry. We
miss your wiggle, your heavy head in our laps, your digging in every bag we
brought home for your “present,” your talking during meals, the snoring,
and especially your sweet, “sugar smacks.” We miss everything about you! We
hope you are playing in a field of flowers in the company of other bullies
and plenty of your favorite stuffed ducks. May you be there waiting for us
under an oak tree, when we cross over to the other side. Your mommy will
look for you when she gets there. You will always be our best friend, the
love of our life, and we’ll carry you in our hearts wherever we may go.

Please welcome Augustus! He wondered into a kickball game last week and his owners were nowhere in site. A kind person took him home for the night then took him to get scanned for a microchip the next day. He does not have a microchip! She put up signs and let the local shelter know she had him. And still no one has come looking for him.

She called us earlier this week and asked us to take him in. He is now at Tucker Animal Hospital and will be getting a check up by Dr Harris later today. He appears to have a skin and ear infection and he needs to be neutered. He is heartworm positive.

Dr Harris believes he is 1 1/2 – 2 years old.

He spent the last week with two pugs and he liked them just fine (a little too fine…he was always trying to hump them). We have not seen him around cats or children. He is sweet and loving and really likes to chase the ball around the house.

Update 8/17/12: Augustus is not up to date on his shots and neutered but we also learned that he is heartworm positive. He will begin treat in one week.

Update 9/26/12: Augustus finished his heartworm treatment and has beend adopted. Congrats Augustus and French family!

Zora – August 8, 2012

Zora, GEBR alum, died peacefully this afternoon at her daddy’s side. Zora was undergoing treatment for Lymphoma and was doing well on chemotherapy. This was not expected.

Our thought and prayers go out to Dr. Louis and Jill Harris,and their family. Thank you for giving Zora the opportunity to tap into her inner Princess. After a life of abuse and neglect, no bulldog deserved it more.

On July 31, 2012 we lost our little boy Max due to a heart attack brought on by a seizure after a walk at his favorite park called Ardmore Park in Atlanta. Max was only a year and nine months, but In his short life, he touched so many hearts, especially those of his adoptive parents Johnny & Jenny Martinez who loved him till the very end. Max lived life to the fullest. Weighing in at 72 lbs, he was a rambunctious boy, a stunner and always up for a good wrestling match with his owner or other bullies. Your parents love you and miss you every single day and we look forward to your hugs & kisses when we meet in heaven.

7/26/12: Meet Shelton, a stray from a local animal shelter. Shelton was transferred to our care, on a medical release needing urgent care. He is now at Riverside Animal Hospital. We will have more information available after he has been evaluated.

Update 9/11/12: Shelton was neutered last week and has moved out of Riverside Animal Hospital and into his foster home. He still has much hair loss; hopefully some with grow back over time. But if not, that’s ok too! He ears looks fantastic compared to what they looked like when he came into rescue. His back leg is a little stiff; we are monitoring that. He is a little slow going up and down steps. Other than that he is good to go! He met his English Bulldog foster sister Maggie last night; so far so good between them. He also met one of the two cats that he will be staying with; he said hello and went on his way. He has meet many children and loves them all.

Update 10/26/12: Shelton’s ear infection has returned. We are treating it and we continue to monitor his leg.

Update 11/5/12: Shelton has been adopted by Louis and Jill Harris. Congrats Shelton, Louis, Jill and Thelma!

Please welcome Josie. She is a 5 1/2 year old owner surrender. She is spayed and now up to date on her shots. Josie’s owner has some other things going on in her life right now and can no longer take care of her. She was left alone in the house for very long periods of time and went potty in the house when she could not hold it any longer. And was then made to live outside.

Although she does not have any right now; Josie does have a history of UTI’s, ear infection and eye infections. She was diagnosed with dry eye by Dr Rush and will need daily eye drops. She also has alopecia.

Josie likes dogs and kids. She has never met a cat. She is sweet and playful.

We had great sadness yesterday as well. Our sweet Misha had a major brain event, from a bleed or another stroke Tuesday night. She was taken to Auburn in very critical condition. She did not survive. Please keep her family: Suzanne, Anthony, Ja’San (her skin brudder) and her fur brudder, Jonathan in your thoughts a prayers. Misha knew more love and care in the eight months she lived with the Monroe’s than anytime in her life.

Meet Adonis, a young male surrendered to GEBR after being found stray. A kind young man, with English Bulldog experience, found Adonis wondering his neighborhood in the extreme heat we’ve experienced lately. Concerned for his welfare, he gave Adonis shelter, took him to the vet for treatment of flea and tick infestation and over 7 days attempted to find the owner of this unmicrochipped male. When his owner could not be found, GEBR was notified.

Adonis is a little on the thin side at the moment but is other wise healthy. After transport, he was immediately taken to Dr. Louis Harris for evaluation (Thank you Dr. Harris and staff for seeing Adonis on such short notice and right before a holiday. We’re sure your practice was very busy yesterday).

Adonis is neutered and heartworm negative. We are currently treating a skin infection and an ear infection.

We must still assess his behavior but we do know he is very friendly to humans and had good behavior around a dog savvy 5 year old. He did display some food aggression while in a boarding facility for 2 days but a the transporter (who kept him overnight) said he displayed no food aggression with her and even ate out of her hand.

Also, was interested in chasing her cats but stopped when she instructed “NO.” He also became a bit irritated around a Standard Poodle but when he was taken to a pet supermarket, was interested in dogs barking at him, pulled a little but backed down when instructed “NO”. Thank you for the additional input Melissa, in helps us tremendously !

He has meet his current foster clan; Meaty, Petie and Chunk and he loves them all! He just wants to play with them or get attention from the humans.

We will allow him to decompress from his wandering and anxiety before we make our final adoption recommendations. Thank you Melissa and Amanda for taking time out of your busy schedules to help us get Adonis to Atlanta.

Tanker is a 3 year old neutered male, animal control mandated owner surrender. It seems that Tanker got himself into a little mischief repeatedly in Florida. Tanker got out of his yard because of a faulty gate latch several times and had 2 scuffles with other dogs. The final straw was him socializing on the beach, then attempting to play with an unattended toddler…..70 pound bulldog + 30 pound toddler….you know the outcome. The toddler was knocked down and got a few scratches in the attempt to play.

Because of Tanker’s history of wandering in the past and yet another incident St. John’s County had enough. He was remanded to the county’s custody on April 29th; the owner was able to get him transferred to their vet until his case was heard.

His Charge: being a social bulldog with a owner who had a fence with a broken latch and took his wandering too casually. Court ruling: Tanker was deemed a vicious dog (although even animal control said he doesn’t fit the definition of a vicious dog). Tanker must be removed from the state of Florida or face a death sentence. The ruling came down last week, they had 2 weeks to find Tanker another home outside of Florida or he would be PTS.

Now Tanker is safe in GA BUT he can never cross the state line into Florida….NEVER!!!!!!!!

Tanker’s had good vet care and is UTD on shots. There is a question of possible entropion but during his incarceration had the left eye “tacked”. Not sure what that means but his eyes look OK right now. We are going to have him evaluated by Dr. Rush anyway.

Tanker is unusual in that he has a lighter brown nose (liver colored) and lighter eyes officially known as a “DUDLEY”, these features are not comformationally correct and had been bred out of English Bulldogs a long time ago unfortunately, there has been a resurgence of people breeding these dogs and selling them at a premium. It makes no difference to us, he’s still a bulldog who needed some help.

Tanker lived with 2 other dogs, but with his history of “scuffles” with other dogs while he was on the lam, he probably needs to be an only dog. Definitely no small children.

We took him for a walk last night with his foster brother Meaty although he pulled on the leash wanting to be close to Meaty, there was no sign or posturing of aggression. He and his foster brother Petie even kissed over the baby gate. He also played with his foster sister Chunk and her friend Baily. He was GREAT with Chunk and Bailey! All he wanted to do was play. He is a sweet boy who loves being with humans.

6/5/12: Meet Jessie, a 6 year old female who was abandoned in a pet shop parking lot in Cobb County. The pet shop was on a very busy highway, fortunately Jessie didn’t stray into traffic. Jessie doesn’t appear to have been well cared for in quite sometime. She is heartworm positive and has a very inflamed skin infection. She was labeled sweet in temperment test on arrival to animal control but did have some issues with growling during her time there, probably from stress. On our ride to Riverside, she was too cute…each time we stopped at a red light she would begin growling and when the light turned green, the growling would stop. She just wanted to voice her displeasure that the car wasn’t moving toward freedom? She may be one of those dogs that can only vocalize in growls….I’ve had one of those(my sweet Racy Macy). Jessie was very happy to accompany me to the vet and said good riddance to the shelter and her past life. She is now being treated for the skin infection and when cleared will undergo Heartworm treatment.

Update 9/19/12: Jessie has completed her HW treatment. She is scheduled to have cherry eye surgery tomorrow. Once she recovers and we find the perfect home, she will be released from Riverside Animal Hospital.

Update 10/8/12: Jessie has been released from Riverside Animal Hospital and is in a foster home. We are assessing her temperament; she is still a little vocal but seems to be sweet. She has some trust issues but warms up quickly. She is taking currently on antibiotics for a skin infection and seasonal allergy medicine. She has gone potty in the house a few times but I think that is from her allergy medicine. It causes her to drink more water than usual.

The only challenging moment was getting Jessie out of her crate (which was in The Wally Wagon). She was not at all interested in letting me near her crate. She barked and growled ever time I went near it. After 30 minutes she settled down enough where I could open the crate door and know she was not going to charge after me once it was open. An hour and a half and many puperonies later she came out. And boy was she happy then. Since that moment she has been doll!

Update 10/12/12: Jessie has come a long way since Monday. On Tuesday when I came home from work she did a happy dance! She loves to rub up against you and sit on your lap. She takes treats gently from my hand. I think she has a crush on Petie! Every time he goes up to the baby gate to see her she does her happy dance!

Update 10/15/12: Jessie has met a number of dogs, young children and men and she loves them all!

Update 1/27/13: Jessie has been adopted by her foster parents! Jessie has come a long way the past few months! She is the social butterfly of the neighborhood. She is friends will all of the adults, children dogs. Thank you Wendy and Bobby for giving her a chance and being patient with her. Congrats to you all!

Meet Jager, a four year old owner surrender. Poor boy has been suffering with skin and ear problems for sometime and when Daddy lost his job, Jager wasn’t able to get the care he needed. He’s a sweet boy, a little reserved right now because he doesn’t feel all that well but will be better in no time. We initially had a scare that he was heartworm positive, but have since found out he is negative. We are awaiting results of ear cultures, preliminary results show that he has some resisitance and there is concern for MRSA. Awaitng final culture results. As it stands at the moment, he has bilateral eye and ear infections along with a nasty skin infection. He also has dry eye, but hoping this will improve after the infections have cleared. He is on antibiotics right now but will change them as soon as we get culture results back. After his skin has improved, he will be neutered and will be ready for a foster or furever home. He has a very sweet disposition, gets along with other dogs. I can’t wait until this boy feels better so we can take him out to play; he is very concerned right now. More pictures to follow when he feels a little better.

Update 6/5/12: Jäger’s skin has made some progress but as of yet, not enough to neuter. Still awaiting final ear culture results since the bacteria is resistant to many of the commonly used drugs. His eyes are improving on antibiotics.

Meet Buster a 4-5 year old stray male. He has been sitting in the shelter since May 4th. Buster is a big boy, tipping the scales at 65 pounds, very sweet and well behaved. No sign of food aggressions. Came in contact with several dogs and cats on our trip to the vet with only mild curiosity. He even made fast friends with a senior bassett hound that was being adopted at Riverside today.

He’s a little worse for wear and the nasty shelter food was not good for his ears and feet. He smells yeasty, but will be corrected quickly with the correct food and some good medicine. He needs to be neutered. His right eye was yucky and appears dry. He is heartworm positive!

Once his skin clears up, he will be neutered then begin heartworm treatment.

He’s a sweetheart and was very happy to be out of the cage after spending 2 weeks in confinement. He appears to be housetrained and is already microchipped but no one cared enough to come and get him from the shelter.

Update 6/5/12: After quarantine and clean up of yeasty ears, tail and feet, he underwent neuter and and dental cleaning last on 6/1/12. After a week of healing he will begin the heartworm treatment process. He’s a big lug with lots of lovin to give.

Update 6/9/12: Buster is recovering from neuter surgery. He will begin heartworm treatment soon.

Update 7/24/12: Buster began his heartworm treatment.

Update 8/21/12: Buster has completed his heartworm treatment! He was released from Riverside and has been moved to his foster home.

Update 9/7/12: Buster has been adopted by his foster family! Congrats Webb family!

Presley – May 19th, 2012

Despite our best efforts, Presley was not able to withstand the assault of acute kidney failure and died peacefully surrounded by people who love him yesterday afternoon. Thank Dr. Ross and the many vets at GVS who did everything possible to bring him through this illness.

Presley joined GEBR in January 2010 and battled with some orthopedic issues the entire time we had him.

Our hearts go out to Candy, his permanent foster mom of two years, who is devastated by this loss. He is running free at the Bridge with no pain or emotional baggage.

Beatrice – May 14th, 2012

One of our early rescues, Beatrice (formerly Lacey) succumbed to Lymphoma on Monday the 14th. Lacey was used as a breeder her entire life, dumped on the side of the road when she was of no use to the breeder anymore. We got her, treated her skin and eye issues. She lead a very charmed life the last three years. So very sorry for your loss Sandra.

Meet Winnie, a young female found wondering on a country road, emaciated and lactating. Attempts at finding her pups were not successful. Winnie was taken to a vet in Vidalia for help. Shortly thereafter, we got the call from our friend Thyra. Winnie is with us now at Riverside Animal Hospital.

Update 5/17/12: Winnie seems to be enjoying her time at Riverside. She moves continuously and is very difficult to get still for a photo. One thing that made me sad, when photo time was done, she put her head down and walked promptly to her run. This little girl is no stranger to confinement. Hoping she’ll be released soon so we can show what it feels like to be free and loved. She’s very very petite and presently very skinny.

Update 6/5/12: Winnie’s breasts have decreased in size enough that we can spay. Dr. Ross has plans for early next week. She does appear thin in photos and her fur is rather dull, this is to be expected after delivering pups, although it wouldn’t be nearly as severe if she had been well cared for during her pregnancy. She is a very tiny little girl. Loves attention but sadly is a little too used to the crate. After playtime is over, she puts down her head and obediently goes back to her run.

Update 6/16/12: Winnie has been spayed and moved to her foster home. She is offically ready for adoption.

Meet PorkChop, a five year old male. Porkie had been wandering for the last week and a person was kind enough to take him to a local vets office for safety. It looks as if he had been cared for well in the past. Good coat, good eyes and neutered. Who knows what led to the recent events? At the moment, he has a yeast problem with horrible yeasty ears and IDC’s. His nose looks crusty but is actually just discharge that hasn’t been cleaned off. His a very laid back guy, who needs to gain about 10 pounds, get on grain free food and have his ears treated. Since he is a stray in relatively good condition, we are mostly concerned about heart worm, that the owners found out about and didn’t want to treat in this rural area. We’ll know more after his exam by Dr. Ross.

Update 5/1/12: PorkChop went to his foster home. He is heartworm negative! He has a horrible ear infection in both ears. He also has a bad skin infection on his neck. He weighs 70 pounds, but actually needs to gain a few pounds. He is pretty laid back and does not seem to mind his foster brother LeRoy.

Update 5/26/12: PorkChop has been adopted by his foster family! That makes two GEBR adoptions for the Rice family this year; LeRoy Brown in February and now PorkChop! Thank you Ron and Sonja for giving these boys a second chance!

GIRL – April 2, 2012

A very sad day for many bulldog rescuers and the Bulldog Nation. A precious little female, surrendered as a senior and adopted by Neely and Champ Waring, went to the Rainbow Bridge. Her name was very simply “GIRL”. Girl was loved by one and all and was the very definition of rescue.

Girl will be terribly missed. Rest in Peace sweet Girl!

Please welcome Gretel to GEBR. She comes to us from Gracies Place Pet Rescue. They pulled her from the shelter in January after her owners dropped her off there. We are told that her owners became too old to care for her.

Gretel is three years old, spayed and up to date on her shots but she is heartworm positive. She is also deaf.

We are told she likes cats and dogs her size or larger but dislikes small dogs. She is at Riverside Animal Hospital now waiting to begin her heartworm treatment. She will stay there for her treatment and then be moved to a foster home.

Update 5/7/12: Gretel began her heartworm treatment. It will be three weeks of treatment and strict crate rest for her, then she will be moved to a foster home and ready for adoption.

Update 6/5/12: Gretel is completing heartworm treatment this weekend and will be ready to restart the newest chapter in her life. All agree that she is not deaf but is profoundly hard of hearing. Hopefully we’ll be able to share some good news upon her release from the hospital.

Update 6/9/12: What a great week for Gretel! She finished her heartworm treatment and got adopted! Congrats Gretel, Will and Teresa!

Meet “BUNNY” (formerly Daisy but she doesn’t respond to it) an 11 month old, probably high english/olde english bulldogge. Bunny was surrendered by her owner on Good Friday by her owner because they couldn’t afford to pay for her skin issues. Full shelter AND a holiday weekend…Bunny didn’t stand a chance of getting out of there….BUT, within 15 minutes, GEBR got the call and it was imperative that we get her out of there ASAP. Thanks to Matt and Danielle of Hilton Head, who made the entire drive yesterday, to bring Bunny to safety. Matt and Danielle were owners of Ruffus (RIP) whom we tried to help several months ago.

Bunny is a very sweet, playful but calm little girl. The sweetest smooshy face and kind eyes. She’s a little on the thin side but is still a puppy and has pounds to grow!! Her skin problem: demodex mange, an easy fix.

Unfortunately, even with the short stay at the shelter, she does have kennel cough. She is at Riverside Animal Hospital now for treatment of the cough, mange and then spay.

Welcome Bunny!!! Your life has only just begun.

Update 4/10/12: Bunny has Demodex Mange along with a secondary bacterial infection and an ear infection. She is being treated now at Riverside Animal Hospital. Once the mange and infections are cleared up she will be spayed and then ready for adoption.

Update 5/8/12: Bunny was spayed today! She will be moved to a foster home this week.

Update 5/9/12: Bunny went to her foster home yesterday. She gets her third promaris treatment today and then back to the vet in two weeks for a recheck.

Update 5/24/12: Bunny is mange free!

Update 6/22/12: Bunny has been adopted! Congrats Bunny and Deb!

Meet Angelina, the poor little girl was picked up as a stray on 3/30 and taken to the shelter in Crowley, LA. Tasha from Hard Knock Life Pittie Rescue saw her on 4/3 and had to save her. She was dripping blood from her rectum and mouth so Tasha rushed her directly to the vet.

Angelina has a broken jaw! Most likely from being kick in the face…by a human.
Her mouth and ears are infected.
She has cherry eye in both eyes.
She has a vaginal prolapse.

After reading Tasha’s plea for help last night, wow could we not respond?

Angelina will receive the care she requires as we took over responsibility for her care this afternoon. For now she will have to stay in Louisiana for treatment because she is too unstable to transport to Georgia.

She will get the jaw fracture fixed and spay to correct vaginal prolapse. Both quite extensive surgeries. The estimate for both of her surgeries is already close to $2000.

After recovery, we’ll work on the eyes. The vet in LA estimates two months before she will be healthy enough to travel.

We will update her progress as often as possible.

Update 4/10/12: Sweet Angelina had her jaw surgery and spay on Saturday. The appliance you see on her face is an external fixator holding the bones and cadaver bone graft in place. A portion of the jaw bone could not be saved so bone graft had to be used. She will have to wear the external fixator for 8-12 weeks. She’s leaving the vet tomorrow to be fostered by Tasha (her hero). Although it looks horrible, the fixator (screws and metal frame) is holding the bones in place so she is much more comfortable than she was before surgery. Tasha says that she’s getting her Diva back and loving all the attention. Two weeks before they’ll fix her eyes. Little girl is spunky, probably the only reason she’s survived this terrible episode.

Update 4/11/12: Angelina was released to Tasha today. She’s pretty as a flower! Angelina will return to the vet for a re check every week until she has healed and can have the external fixator removed.

Update 5/8/12: Angelina had her cherry eye surgery. She will be joining us in GA soon.

Update 6/14/12: Angelina had her fixator removed. A few more weeks and she will be joining us in GA.

Update 6/30/12: Angelina has made it to GA! We will be taking her to the vet next week to get her ears checked out; they are a bit swollen. Once we get the ok from the vet she will be ready for adoption.

Update 7/7/12: Angelina has been cleared for adoption!

Update 9/8/12: Angelina has been adopted by the Dudek family!
