Update 5/17/12:  Winnie seems to be enjoying her time at Riverside.  She moves continuously and is very difficult to get still for a photo.  One thing that made me sad, when photo time was done, she put her head down and walked promptly to her run.  This little girl is no stranger to confinement.  Hoping she’ll be released soon so we can show what it feels like to be free and loved. She’s very very petite and presently very skinny.

Update 5/1/12: PorkChop went to his foster home.  He is heartworm negative!  He has a horrible ear infection in both ears.  He also has a bad skin infection on his neck.  He weighs 70 pounds, but actually needs to gain a few pounds.  He is pretty laid back and does not seem to mind his foster brother LeRoy.

Girl will be terribly missed. Rest in Peace sweet Girl!

Gretel is three years old, spayed and up to date on her shots but she is heartworm positive.  She is also deaf.

We are told she likes cats and dogs her size or larger but dislikes small dogs. She is at Riverside Animal Hospital now waiting to begin her heartworm treatment. She will stay there for her treatment and then be moved to a foster home.

Update 5/7/12: Gretel began her heartworm treatment.  It will be three weeks of treatment and strict crate rest for her, then she will be moved to a foster home and ready for adoption.

Bunny is a very sweet, playful but calm little girl.  The sweetest smooshy face and kind eyes.  She’s a little on the thin side but is still a puppy and has pounds to grow!!  Her skin problem: demodex mange, an easy fix.

Unfortunately, even with the short stay at the shelter, she does have kennel cough. She is at Riverside Animal Hospital now for treatment of the cough, mange and then spay.

Update 4/10/12: Bunny has Demodex Mange along with a secondary bacterial infection and an ear infection.  She is being treated now at Riverside Animal Hospital.  Once the mange and infections are cleared up she will be spayed and then ready for adoption.

Update 5/8/12:  Bunny was spayed today!  She will be moved to a foster home this week.

Update 5/9/12:  Bunny went to her foster home yesterday.  She gets her third promaris treatment today and then back to the vet in two weeks for a recheck.

Angelina has a broken jaw!  Most likely from being kick in the face…by a human. 
Her mouth and ears are infected. 
She has cherry eye in both eyes. 
She has a vaginal prolapse.

After reading Tasha’s plea for help last night, wow could we not respond?

Angelina will receive the care she requires as we took over responsibility for her care this afternoon.  For now she will have to stay in Louisiana for treatment because she is too unstable to transport to Georgia.

She will get the jaw fracture fixed and spay to correct vaginal prolapse.  Both quite extensive surgeries.  The estimate for both of her surgeries is already close to $2000.

After recovery, we’ll work on the eyes.  The vet in LA estimates two months before she will be healthy enough to travel.

Update 4/10/12:  Sweet Angelina had her jaw surgery and spay on Saturday. The appliance you see on her face is an external fixator holding the bones and cadaver bone graft in place. A portion of the jaw bone could not be saved so bone graft had to be used.  She will have to wear the external fixator for 8-12 weeks. She’s leaving the vet tomorrow to be fostered by Tasha (her hero). Although it looks horrible, the fixator (screws and metal frame) is holding the bones in place so she is much more comfortable than she was before surgery. Tasha says that she’s getting her Diva back and loving all the attention. Two weeks before they’ll fix her eyes. Little girl is spunky, probably the only reason she’s survived this terrible episode.

Update 4/11/12: Angelina was released to Tasha today. She’s pretty as a flower! Angelina will return to the vet for a re check every week until she has healed and can have the external fixator removed.

Update 5/8/12: Angelina had her cherry eye surgery.  She will be joining us in GA soon.

Doug is thin with poor quality fur from bad nutrition.  He has infections in both ears; cherry eyes so large that he can barely see, that is if he can see through the eye boogers, too.  His front paws are splayed, just like Petunia’s, evidence of living in a crate (with no plastic bottom of course). He does seem to become quite anxious with his poor vision, particularly when he tries to look straight ahead or down.  After he settled down in the nice cool car, he was very sweet and curious of his surroundings. We were told he was still intact, but not really sure.  His baggage is a little small; possibly already neutered or has an undescended testicle.  He’s now with Dr. Ross, at Riverside Animal Hospital, in a clean air conditioned pen.  We’ll know more after his complete exam.

Update 3/26/12: Unfortunately Doug is heartworm positive.

He’s scheduled to have his eyes fixed and neuter (one testicle in the sack and another undescended in the groin) tomorrow.  After a week recovery, he’ll begin heartworm treatment.  After some TLC, he’s already beginning to look and feel much better.

Update 4/9/12: Doug had his cherry eye surgery and neuter.  He is recovering nicely.  He will begin heartworm treatment next week. 

Update 5/7/12: Doug began her heartworm treatment.  It will be three weeks of treatment and strict crate rest for him, then he will be moved to a foster home and ready for adoption.

Doug is not ready for adoption yet, but we are accepting applications for him at this time.

Update 4/11/12: Fiona went to her foster home. She has come a long way in the past few weeks but is still a little shy and fearful. She finds comfort in her crate and prefers to be in there. Her foster brother Gus went in with her yesterday to keep her company. And her foster sister Gabby goes looking for her when Mom says “let’s go get Fiona”. Gus and Gabby and taking care of her; surely she will feel safe in no time.  She weighed 60.9 yesterday when she left Riverside Animal Hospital. Dr. Ross decided against a “diet” pill for now; we are hopeful that she will drop some pounds from playing with Gus and Gabby.

We are accepting adoption applications for Fiona now but she will not be available for adoption until all of her medical issues are addressed.

Boss joined GEBR in early October 2011.  His owners dumped him at the local shelter because they no longer wanted him.  Within three days he was in our care, getting checked out by our vet and getting treatment for a respiratory infection that he picked up at the shelter.  Within a week he was adopted!  Teresa McMillan and her family had recently suffered the loss of their bulldog Bubba.  Boss came into their lives at the perfect moment.  They spend four months with each.  Boss knew love and happiness for those four months. 

Goodbye, Google! Daddy and mommy cannot accompany you for your last, final walk, You are a big dog now, you have to take your final trip by yourself. Daddy and mommy will meet you again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge when the time comes. We promise you! Be brave and behave as a little angel in heaven !

Update 3/12/12: Buttercup went to her foster home on Saturday.  She LOVES attention! We are treating ear and skin infections now.  Once those clear up we will have her knee evaluated.

Update 4/21/12:  Buttercup went to a new foster home that will hopefully be her forever home.  She is getting to know her potential brother, if all works out she will be adopted into this home.

Update 5/1/12: Buttercup had her evaluation with Dr. Cross at GVS.  Unfortunately this little girl does have some bad knees!  The diagnosis: Right and Left cranial cruciate ligament tears and right medial patellar luxation.  She goes back at the end of the month for her first surgery on her right knee and then back two months later for left knee.  
 

He is the typical bulldog and has a good temperment except for a few areas.  He will bark at the front door if someone rings the bell but will back down as soon as his human lets him know it’s OK.  He also barks at any noises from the outside.  He also pulls quite a bit on the leash and does not like to be approached by other people while he is on the leash.  He gets along well with other dogs and loves the dog park.  A home with a fenced in back yard is a must as walks could be physically challenging and a bit of a pain.  He loves car rides and the dog park.

Update 3/12/12:  Meatball is now up to date on all of his shots.  He has a double ear infection that we are treating. 

Update 3/31/12:  Meatball has packed his bags and moved to Florida with his new father and English Bulldog brother.  Congrats Meatball, Jeff and Spencer. 

Update 3/12/12:  Maude had her cherry eye surgery and we were able to get x-rays of her hips.  She has arthritis in her hip joints on both sides, the femoral heads are flattened and the pelvis joint is deformed.  We also think that when she walks the hip is slipping out. Funny though, Maude doesn’t seem to notice since she’s probably had this all her life. Will be going to GVS for evaluation and possible FHO surgery.

Update 3/20/12:  Maude began her heartworm treatment.  Once it is complete, she will be moved to a foster home and will go to the specialist to have her hips evaluated. 

Update 4/14/12: Maude has completed her heartworm treatment and was moved to a foster home.  She is a love bug!  She is getting along great with her human siblings, both under three years old.  She likes her canine foster brothers too but dose not like when they get attention.  Her foster parnets are working on this behavior.  We hope to get her to the specialist in the new few weeks to have her hips evaluated. 

Update 5/4/12: Maude had her evaluation with Dr. Cross at GVS today.  Looks like her knees are more of an issue than her hips!  But she still does have some hip issues and some shoulder issues!

Diagnosis: Right and left cranial cruciate ligament tears, bilateral hip dysplasia with osteoarthritis, shoulder arthritis.  She will start joint supplements and she is going in on Monday for her first knee surgery.  She will go back in 6-8 weeks for the other.

Update 5/7/12: Maude had her first of two knee surgeries.  All went well.  She is recovering at her foster home.  She goes back in two weeks to get her stitches removed then back in six weeks for a followup visit and x-ray.  If everything is healing as it should be at the six week check up she will have her other knee done then.

We are accepting applications for Maude at this time, but she will not be ready for adoption until all of her medical needs have been addressed.

Update 2/27/12: CB made to Atlanta Saturday afternoon!  Thank you John Ross for helping her get here.  She can not see very well becasue of all the eye “boogers” from her untreated dry eye.  She is also still a little scared and unsure of her new surroundings.  Her foster parents Angie and Cale are taking it slow and trying to build trust.  Thank you Angie and Cale for being so patient with her!

Once CB is spayed and has her eye evaluated she will be available for adoption.

Update 3/1/12: CB was spayed and had 7 teeth removed!  Dr Rush thinks she may have a little bit of arthritis in her front right leg.  She is getting tacrolimus twice a day for her dry eye, and it is helping.  She still has some trust issues, not that we can blame her, but she is coming around.

Update 3/17/12: CB got her stitches out today.  She is offically ready for adoption!  Thank you Dr Rush and staff at Dekalb Animal Hospital for taking great care of her.

Jasmine is 2 1/2 years old and is possibly Aurora’s daughter.  Jasmine will also be in isolation for 2 weeks then will undergo spay, cherry eye and entropion repair.  She is very sweet and loving.

Update 3/1/12: Jasmine went to her foster home yesterday. And we are happy to say that she will be fostered with Aurora! She will to go back to the vet soon for surgery but we are excited that she gets to experience the good life for a little while first. She is very underweight and a little timid but she seems to like people and she wants to be touch. She is has no problem letting you clean her ears or clean the eye boogers from her her. Jasmine has dry eye in both eyes. She is happy to be around Aurora! She prefers to be outside, poor girl has probably never stepped foot into a house until yesterday afternoon. Good thing her foster parents have a shady fenced in yard for her and Jasmine as they get comfortable with their new surroundings. Thank you Deb and Bill for taking them in and helping them transition into the good life.

Update 3/12/12:  Jasmine was spayed, had a palate surgery and cherry eye surgery today.  She is awake and doing fine.  Once her stitches are removed she will be ready for adoption.

Update 2/24/12:  Pachino, now known as Leroy Brown Rice, was neutered this morning.  He is awake and doing fine.  Once he is fully recovered he will be adopted by his foster parents.

Update 2/4/12: Bubba was adopted! He packed his bags and moved to Florida with his new parents and English Bulldog sister Kinsey. Congrats Bubba, Jessica, Eric and Kinsey!

On initial evaluation this afternoon, he probably has dry eye, needs to be neutered, dewormed and brought up to date on vaccines.

Right now, he is in the comfort of Riverside Animal Hospital…no more rainy nights for him. After a good scrubbing down and several days of antibiotics, we’ll know more about what we will have to do about the tail and tail pocket.  He has a very serious face but is a very sweet boy who loves to give kisses and gets along with other dogs.

Welcome Dollar!  This is the first day of the rest of your life.

Update 1/19/12: Dollar is still at the vet being treated for his horrible tail infection. He is on oral antibiotics and has to have the tail pocket irrigated out 3 times a day. This is very uncomfortable for him. Dr. Ross said that he will require treatment for several weeks before we will see any improvement, then I’m sure we’ll amputate the tail and possibly have to do extensive reconstruction.

Update 2/9/12: Dollar will be going to the specialist tomorrow to have his tail amputated.  Please keep him in your thoughts. 

Update 2/24/12: Dollar had his tail amputated on 2/10 and had his stitches removed yesterday.  He is recovering nicely and is now ready for adoption!

Update 7/19/11: Cookey is still battling pneumonia but is showing a little improvement. After she has recovered from this ordeal, on to heartworm treatment.

Update 8/1/11: Cookey is out of isolation and continues to be the vet tech’s favorite. When they speak of her, everyone smiles. She must recover from her very frail condition before we can proceed with heartworm treatment. She is one of the sweetest, unassuming and shy dogs we have ever come across.

Update 10/12/11: Saw Cookey yesterday. My goodness, she’s a beautiful American Bulldog. She’s gained probably 20 pounds and looks very healthy. She’s a talker who loves attention. She’s a favorite at the vet so gets lots of free time. She was spayed a few weeks ago. Right now, she has a rather large hotspot on her chest that is being treated. As soon as there is enough improvement, we will begin heart worm treatment. Because of her heart worm load, we have decided it would be best to treat her over 2 months.  Her nagging cough that could not be explained has been resolved.

Update 12/13/11: Cookey has finished her heartworm treatment and is ready for adoption.

Update 4/8/12: Cookey has been adopted! 

Update 12/21/11: Wilbur’s respertory infection is all cleared up.  He will be neutered soon and then begin heartworm treatment.  He will stay at our vet during his heartworm treatment and then he will move to a foster home.

Update 1/5/12: Poor boy has really had it rough and while at the shelter acquired respiratory infection.

Update 1/10/12: Sweet boy has made enough improvement that he was able to get neutered today. After a brief recovery period, he will have his heartworm treatment.

Update 2/10/12: Wilbur is finished with heartwrom treatment and was moved to a foster home.

Update 3/3/12: Wilbur has been adopted!  Congrats Wilbur, Robert and Jackie!

Jefferson came into the shelter with very red and itchy skin.  He had wounds on the side of his neck. Scrapes proved demodex mange with an overlying bacterial infection.  He was started on antibiotics and they began Ivermectin for the mange.  He did make rapind improvement during his short stay at the shelter.

He’s now at Dr. Ross getting the once over. We will continue antibiotics and begin Promeris for the mange.  He isn’t nearly as red anymore and the nasty neck swounds are drying up.  He’s a sweet boy and quite the “talker”.  He will need some potty training.  He will be brought up to date on shots.   He is reportedly eartworm negative but we will recheck just to be sure.  After his skin clears a bit more, he will be neutered.

Update 12/21/11: Jefferson is still being treated at our vet.  Once his skin looks healthy enough he will be neutered and move to a foster home.

Update 1/5/11: Sweet baby was finally made enough improvement that he was able to be neutered yesterday.  He went to his foster home and is ready for adoption.

Update 1/20/12:  Jefferson has been adopted!

As you can see, Angel is grossly overweight. Because of this we will have to wait for her to lose some of that weight before we can even consider spaying her. She is being fostered by a trusted foster family, until spay can take place.

She is heartworm negative and is now up to date on shots. Angel is not potty trained and will work on that in her foster home.

Angel is very very sweet and gets along with other animals. All she wants is attention and some love.

Update 12/21/11: Angel is doing great in her foster home.  She is learning how to potty outside instead of inside and how to exercise.  She is going on walks every day with her foster mom, brother and sister.  She is looking thinner already!  We hope that she will be at an ideal weight to undergo surgery within a month.  Once she is spayed she will be ready for adoption.

Update 1/5/12: Angel is dealing with a UTI and an eye infection but she is down to 66 pounds. A few more pounds and a clean bill of health then she will be ready to be spayed then ready for adoption.

Update 2/10/12: Angel is walking 1.5 miles a day and spends an hour a day playing in the yard with her foster sister.  They chase soccer balls all around the yard.  She is so happy and looking better every day.  A few more pounds to go and she will be ready to get spayed and then ready for adoption.

Update 2/28/12:  Andgel is down to 61 pounds!!!

Update 3/23/12: Angel had an emergency surgery yesterday afternoon to repair a corneal abrasion.  Dr Winston was able to put a graft over it just in time.  If we had not gotten to it in time, we would have had to remove her eye. She is stable and doing well.  She has a follow up appointment next week.  Dr Winston says it will be 4-5 weeks before she is fully recovered.  Thank you to her foster mom Gregg for getting her to the doctor and for saving her eye!

She is down to 54 pounds!  We are so happy for her and so thankful to her foster family, dogs included, for helping her get to a healhty weight!

Update 3/28/12: Angel went in for her follow up visit and unfortunately had to have another surgery.  Dr. Winston went into surgery thinking she was going to remove her eye but was able to do another graft instead.  She was also able to do entropian surgery on both eyes.  Angel is home now and doing fine.  She goes back next Tuesday for a follow up visit.  Fingers crossed she will not need any more eye surgeries! 
Check out her new “skinny girl” photos.  She looks amazing compared to how she looked on November 23 when she joined GEBR. 

Update 5/8/12: Angel was spayed today.

Update 5/9/12: Angel has been adopted byher foster family!  She is such a happy healthy girl that has come so far in the past 5 months.  We are so happy for her and the McMorran’s!

Those who knew Buster, fell in love instantly.  His gentle spirit was endearing.  Christa had the opportunity to spend 14 years with the joy of Buster in her life and with a heavy heart had to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Ruffus was a sweet young pup who was cherished by his family, Matt and Danielle.  Unfortunately, Ruffus suffered from severe seizures along with many other medical conditions.  Ruffus’ family did everything they could to control his many issues and provided wonderful care.  They were unselfish enough to know that Ruffus had a shot at a better life in rescue,  where he would undergo a complete evaluation and treatment.   Unfortunately, Ruffus’ condition was much more severe than anyone ever imagined.  Ruffus died of acute liver failure shortly after arrival to GEBR.

Ruffus was the apple of Matt and Danielle’s eyes and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, even for a short time.  We are so very sorry you went to the Rainbow Bridge at such a young age…we have to take comfort in knowing that you are such a good boy that God needed you by his side.  Enjoy your new life Ruffus, run free without pain or anxiety, your body is completely healed.  We love you and miss you terribly.

Welcome to bulldog Utopia Bob!

Update 11/17/11:  Bob went to his foster home.  He and his foster brother Moose seem to get along well.  Bob is still a little shy and scared but is coming around.  He also has a two year old foster sister and a 4 month old foster brother (both human) that he seems to enjoy.  He craves human attention and wants to be touched at all times.  He also knows to go to the door when he needs to go potty.  The plan is for him to gain some weight and then go back to Riverside Animal Hospital for heartworm treatment.

Update 1/5/12: Bob’s hair is coming in nicely and he is gaining weight.  A little more time, love and weight gain then he will to go back to Riverside for heartworm treatment.

Update 1/19/12: About 6 weeks ago, he was an emaciated, forlorn boy who had given up. His eyes were vacant and he was very aloof.  Bob has gained 10 pounds, the sparkle is back in his eyes and he was interested in what the other bulldogs were doing at the meet up. Bob went in to have his heartworm treatment this morning. He had the first treatment today and if he is stable overnight, will have the second tomorrow, then 3 weeks of crate rest (at the vet), no visitors, no excitement.

Update 2/8/12: Bob has been adopted by his foster family!  Congrats Bob, Megan, John, Olivia, Lucas and Moose!

Ginger is up to date on shots and heartworm negative. She does have a little skin infection, probably staph or flea allergy and she will need to have her knee evaluated by an orthopedist. BUT, Ginger has a little weight problem and must lose a few pounds before we can even consider that prospect.

Update 12/16/11: Hoss is still being treated for infections and mange.  He is not healthy enough to be neutered just yet.  He is enjoying some time in a foster home and will go back to the vet in two weeks to get scraped to see if the mange is gone and will hopefully be healthy enough then to be neutered. 

Update 1/5/12: He is still fighting a yeast infection and mange but he loving life in his foster home. Once his skin is better he will be neutered.

Update 11/10/11: Logan went to his foster home. He and his foster brother Hampton hit it off instantly! His ear infection is about cleared up and the x-rays of his hip did not show anything that we need to be concerned about. He needs to gain a few pounds but other than that he is happy, healthy and ready for adoption!

Update 1/5/11: Peewee got a little cranky in his last foster home and was having difficulty navigating the stairs.  Dr. Ross examined him and diagnosed arthritis in his elbows, he also has some chronic eye issues from poor care in the past.  He is now on Previcox and will require eye drops.  He has been moved to a more low key foster home.

Update: 2/20/2012: Peewee’s eyes have been getting much more cloudy lately and he seems to be having increasing difficulty seeing. Off to the opthalmologist we go!!  He has dry eye in both eyes and will be getting tacrolimus drops in each eye twice a day.

Update 3/19/12: Pee Wee has been to the opthalmologist twice now and each time his eyes are looking a little bit better! He will continue with daily doses of tacrolimus for the rest of his life. He is taking nu joint to help manage his arthritis. He loves to play!

Update 3/25/12: Once Pee Wee sees the opthalmologist for his final follow up visit, he will be adopted by his foster family.

Boss has been adopted…congratulations Boss!

Meet BOSS, a 3 year old male , surrendered to a shelter by his owners. Boss is a sweet but slightly withdrawn fellow. He came into the shelter late last Friday and was promptly taken home for the weekend, by the rescue coordinator. She knew that we would make room for him with GEBR and didn’t want him to stay at the shelter unnecessarily. She took him home, cleaned him up, clipped his very long and overgrown nails and gave him some much needed love and attention. Unfortunately, he did need to go back to the shelter for examination and neuter(their rules, not ours) and I picked him up early Saturday morning.
Right now, he is at our vets because even during that short time at the shelter he developed a respiratory infection and his neuter wound is draining. He also has ear infections.
I can’t wait to see this beautiful boy with some light back in his eyes. I know there’s a Velcro dog in there just screaming to be set free.

On September 2, 2011, Daniel and Tammy Payne lost the love of their lives.  Isabella came to live with them in May, 2003 and quickly stole their hearts. From that point on Bella lived a charmed life bringing joy to her new family every single day.  In the winter of 2009, Bella was diagnosed with an incurable condition; she fought her battle  with the grace of a true southern lady.  Isabella had only recently celebrated her 14th birthday, surrounded by her loving family.

Petunia is a 3-4 year old stray from Madison County Animal Control. All we know is that Petunia was a stray found in a Trailer Park in the area. She was being fed by the neighborhood.
After wandering into someone’s home, and seeing how thin she was getting, they called AC.
Petunia is a sweet girl, starving for attention AND food. She was found with a collar and a 2009 rabies tag but no microchip. There are indications that she was well cared for in the past. She has a scar on one hind leg from knee surgery that may have been related to some type of trauma since there is scarring near the ankle. She also has no indication of C-Section, nor does her woohaa look like she free whelped any pups. She also appears well breed, with a beautiful bulldog face and build. Possibly stolen from her loving home, then dumped when the scum who stole her couldn’t care for her any longer? What is concerning is that her toes look splayed from living in a crate for a long period and callouses on her knees from living on cement. Think baby girl would have quite a story to tell if she could talk.
Petunia is very dirty, very itchy and very thin right now. At the vet, she was excited to see other dogs with no indication of aggression. With humans, she cowers with fast movement and drops to the floor regularly for belly rubs. Even in her stressed state, I was able to touch every single part of her body without fear.
Petunia will be spending sometime at the vet getting a complete evaluation, shots and spay after she has gained a little weight.

Update 9/22/11: Marley is heartworm negative! He is now up to date on shots and on flea and heartworm preventative. He is healthy and his skin and fur look great. He went to his foster home yesterday. He will be hanging with two little pugs while we search for his forever home. As you can see from the photos he has a rather large under bite and his tongue is always hanging out just a little. But he does not mind using that tongue to give you kisses! And he LOVES bully rubs. If you reach out and touch him he will drop to the floor and roll over so you can rub him.

Update 8/19/11: Layla had a few little procedures today. Thank you Dr. Rush for caring for this sweet girl.  Layla DOES NOT have entropion, she has very severe dry eye with a secondary infection. She is now on several types of eye drops to get the infection under control and treat the dry eye.  She had palate surgery today, along with spay.  She is now up to date on her shots and is Heart worm negative (thank goodness).  Her biggest issue: ear infections. Both ears are in terrible condition requiring drops and oral antibiotics.
Layla is resting comfortably with Stephanie until she gets her stitches out next week.  After she has recovered she will be transferred to her foster home, the Tobin’s. This will be the fourth foster dog the Tobins have taken into their home…Thank you!
Update 8/29/11: Layla went to see Dr. Rush today to get her stitches out and to have her ears rechecked. Her ears are still infected but we will continue to treat them. She is now at her foster home with her foster sister and GEBR alum Daisey.

He had a panic attack while being boarded due to the water damage at our house (mold cleanup was being performed and we had to live in a hotel for a week)  He died two days into being boarded – he was on medication for anxiety separation but for whatever reason he panicked – they rushed him to the vet that we use and it was too late…..our hearts were broken and still are!

Under Kelley’s care, Prissy blossomed into a beautiful girl.  She had a wonderful life filled with love and security,  something she hadn’t known for much of her life.  Prissy was instrumental in bringing Kelley, Ruthann and Jenn with Florida English Bulldog Rescue together, leading to the creation of Georgia English Bulldog Rescue and The Bully Ball.  Prissy had no idea how important she was, she only cared that she had love, a warm place to lay her head, and a full belly.   She has helped hundreds of other bulldogs reach safety and enabled us to provide much needed medical care.

Prissy succumbed to a malignancy that hid well and progressed quickly.  She was with her loved ones, holding her in their arms as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Even though Prissy is gone, her legacy will live on through  GEBR and The Bully Ball.  Hundreds, maybe even thousands of bulldogs will benefit from her very existence well after all of us have crossed the bridge.

Prissy, we miss you every day,  there is a hole in our learts that will never be filled.

We welcome baby Luigi to the rescue, he is only 8 months old. Luigi was purchased by a young couple as a healthy, happy pup. Unfortunately, during a vet visit, he was discovered to have a cleft palate, something that was never disclosed by the “breeder”. Faced with the possibility of major surgical bills to correct this issue, they gave Luigi to a family friend who was more than willing to take care of Luigi’s problems if they ever arose. BUT, Luigi is a young boy who only wants to have fun and is a playing machine. The two senior cats in his new home didn’t seem to enjoy Luigi’s playfulness as much as he thought and were beginning to suffer health issues related to anxiety.

Luigi was surrendered to GEBR for treatment if necessary and ultimately, adoption.

Even though Luigi has a cleft palate, it doesn’t extend to his face. He is able to eat solid food well and drinks from a Licks It attached to his crate.

He is UTD on shots but is not neutered. He will undergo evaluation of the palate and if recommended, have it surgically corrected. At that time, he will be neutered.

Update 7/28/11: Petie is now in our care. With the help of our friends and volunteers, we were able to get him to safety.

Petie is 4 years old and by all accounts has suffered with skin problems all his life. He was repeatedly treated with antibiotics, prednisone and medicated baths, only to have the skin issues return.  We were told he was allergy tested and was “allergic to everything”.  He’s a white bulldog, they usually are.
On examination, his skin is red with patchy fur loss.  The fur feels very waxy so he’s probably suffering from yeast infection at this point. We have no record of scrape for mange and will do that ASAP (doesn’t really look like mange though).  For now, we’ll change him to a good quality grain free food and taper his prednisone.  Also begin treatment with antibiotics and anti fungal medications.  I’m sure we can get him looking better in no time.
He will need to be neutered.  He is UTD on vaccines and is heartworm negative.

Update 8/5/11: Pete’s skin scrape for mange was negative.  He’s on multiple medications, including ketoconazole, to treat his skin.  He is now on grain free food.  Hoping that after his skin clears he will never have this issue again. Petie remains at our vet but we anticipate transfer to his foster home very soon.

Update 8/13/11:  He is looking A LOT better than he did two weeks ago but he still has a skin infection and he is still missing hair.  He is pretty scabby, flaky and itchy too.  Poor guy!  He loves… his new food, Taste of the Wild – Pacific Stream! His skin is looking less pink.   We are hopeful that he will be feeling and looking better in a week or two; at least enough to get neutered and moved to his foster home.

Update 9/22/11: Picked up Petie from the vet yesterday to take him home and get him ready for his debut at Paws in the Park on Sunday.  He is such a sweet boy!  No matter how bad he looks or feels his little pink hairless tail is always wagging! He has made some progress but still has a long way to go.  Dr Ross took him off steroids last week.  We will wait another two weeks then do allergy testing.

Update 10/6/11: Petie went to Riverside Animal Hospital yesterday so they could draw blood and do allergy testing.  We should have the results in a few weeks.  He is getting weekly baths with medicated shampoo.  I think they are helping.  He is less waxy but still scappy and a little itchy.

He was feeling good yesterday! He was jumping and bouncing around so I let him out of his room to visit with his foster brother and sister.

Update 10/11/11: The allergy serum has been ordered and he’ll begin allergy shots as soon as it comes in.

Update 3/13/12: Petie had his appointment with Dr Joel Griffies at Animal Dermatology Clinic.  Petie is covered in bacteria!  They took blood so they can run some tests, just so we can eliminated a few things that might be causing his issues.  We also two took swabs, one from his ear and one from his skin so the lab can do cultures.  This will help us determine the best drug possible to kill all of the bacteria.  He is getting keflex until we get the results back from the lap.  The plan is to treat the bacteria infection aggressively until it is all cleared up.  He will continue his allergy shots and continue eating Taste of the Wild, Pacific Stream.  Instead of once a week baths, he will be getting every other day baths for the next few months.  He is up to 51 pounds!  No matter what this boy has been through and no matter how horrible he feels or how itchy he is, Petie is the sweetest, most well behaved.

Update 3/21/12: Peties blood work came back normal.  But his cultures were pretty stubborn when trying to come up with the best medicine to treat him with.  Dr Joel Griffies decided to treat him with zeniquin for his skin and amikacin/dex/saline for his ears.  We go back in three weeks for a check up.  Wish us luck!

Update 4/10/12:  Petie had his follow up appointment with Dr Griffies.  The bacteria infection is all cleared up!  Which is great news but we are concerned because Petie is still very pink, scabby and crusty.  Dr Griffies took three pieces of skin to send to the lab to do biopsies.  Fingers crossed we can get to the bottom of this soon.  He does have a yeast infection on his belly which we are treating with Ketoconazole.  His ear infection is looking much better but it is not completely cleared up yet.  We will continue to treat.  He is still getting baths three times a week.  We will update as soon as we get the results of the skin biopsies.  He has gained even more weight, he is up to 55 pounds.  He must be feeling better!

Update 4/24/12:  We finally got the skin biopsy results back for sweet Petie. After suffering for years, he has been diagnosed with an auto immune skin disorder called Pemphigus Foliaceus.  He began high doses of prednisone today and we will keep our fingers crossed that we can get this disease into remission.  He will need to be on prednisone for the rest of his life but at least now we know the enemy and can get this dear fellow on the road to recovery.

Ariel was in a “breeding situation” and apparently wouldn’t get with the program. Lucky for her…when her owners turned her into animal control a volunteer started calling everyone she knew in rescue. Fortunately one of her contacts is with DREAM dachshund rescue whom we met at a Ahimsa House event last fall. Within hours Ariel was safe.

She will most definitely be spayed so no one will be able to try and force this girl to have pups again!  Welcome to the good life Ariel!

Background: Georgia, Baby G and now Gigi was rescued from a less than perfect situation in South Atlanta, in December, 2010 and was suffering from multiple infections. After diligent care, she was brought back to the beautiful condition pictured above. If not for this horrible economy Gigi would still be in her home, but her owners selfishly did what was best for Gigi because they knew they would have difficulty affording future care. Mr. and Mrs. Williams, you did a fantastic job with Georgia. Thank you for trusting us with your precious baby.

Update 7/22/2011: Gigi is out of surgery and recovering. She had her palate done and plans were to amputate her tail…we were going to address the anal gland abscess at a later time. WELL….it seems Gigi had Beefy Butt(that’s a medical term now!). The abscess near her rectum was not an anal gland infection but an abscess tract running down from her very infected, deep and twisted tail. She will stay the night at Dr’ Rush’s office. Hoping this will solve Miss Gigi’s hiney problems.

Update 7/13/2011:

This is Louis; our 17th rescue for the year!  He is happy, healthy, neutered and up to date on his shots.   He is 4 1/2 (will be 5 in November).   He is pretty playful and athletic.  He loves his toys a little too much and has been labeled toy aggressive and possessive by his previous owner.   We know he likes dogs and children but we do not know if he likes cats.  Since he loves his toys SO much we will be keeping them away from his foster sisters until he learns to share.   Louis is an owner surrender but it was not a decision that came easily for his owner.   He has been well taken care of all of his life but due to some changes in his owner’s life she thought it would be best to re-home him.  Louis is ready for adoption so please send in your adoption application today!

Update 6/28/2011:  After a few days in rescue to relax, it became obvious to us that Mariposa had serious palate issues.  So much so that her play time had to be severely limited.  Something that Mariposa didn’t enjoy all that much.  “Posey” had palate surgery with Dr. Rush on Friday, June 24th.  She tolerated the surgery well and is back in her foster home recovering and breathing very well.  She’ll be back to her playful self in no time!

Update 6/17/11: Sweet boy is on antibiotics to eradicate any infection that may be lurking in his anal glands. He is scheduled to see a Soft Tissue Surgeon (the same one who did Sophie’s surgery last year) on June 27th. We anticipate he will have Palate surgery, neuter, removal of anal glands and possibly tail amputation…$$$$$$$$$ YIKES

Update 6/27/11: Beefy had his evaluation at Georgia Vet Specialists this morning. It was quite an ordeal getting him there…relaxed. Before the ride we gave him a natural anti-anxiety liquid and then swaddled him in his new Thundershirt. (If you have dogs with anxiety issues, fear of thunderstorms or seperation anxiety…they’re awesome!). He tolerated the 90 minute trip like a champ! Only panting slightly during the ride.

NOW THE EVALUATION:

1. Palate, Saccules and Nares need addressed

2. Neuter

3. Excision of right and left anal glands

4. Tail amputation

GRAND TOTAL: $3700.00 (estimate) and that’s with a rescue discount

Beefy is boarding at GVS this evening, since he has such a difficult time in the car and will undergo surgery tomorrow morning. We anticipate discharge the following afternoon.

Update 6/28/11: Mr. Beefy tolerated surgery very well, not sure I can say that for the surgeon, though. His palate and nares issues are corrected. The tail was another issue and very difficult. It seems that Beefy never suffered with anal gland issues at all. The wound on his backside connected all the way up into his pelvis…where his very twisted and curled tail FINALLY ENDED. The surgeon said “no human finger could ever reach that far.” It is very infected. With the help of another surgeon, they got as far back as they physically could, without actually getting into his pelvis. They had never seen anything like this before! Now we keep our fingers crossed that they were able to get it all. Beefy is staying the night of course and MAY be able to come home tomorrow, with a drain in his back side.

Now for the really bad news: It seems that both of Beefy’s back knees are blown out as well. After he recovers from this recent surgery, we will have to look forward to 2 more orthopedic surgeries.

Update 7/2/11: Mr. Beefy has turned the corner, eating and drinking well. His breathing is much much better and the back end doesn’t seem to be bothering him. I imagine the behind was very painful before surgery and after getting rid of the infection feels better. The drain will be removed today. Now we watch and wait to see if the surgery was a success. After recovery, we will have him evaluated by the orthopedic surgeons to address his back legs.

Update 6/28/2011:  Pancake was transferred to her new foster home after spending 2 weeks in quarantine, after rescue from a shelter. She’s a lovely, sweet and very gentle girl who listens well and has endless curiosity. She is potty trained. She is now spending her days with a doting foster mom and dad but particularly enjoys the time she is spending with her 2 legged foster sister, Edie.

Maggie died unexpectedly this morning.

Maggie entered rescue in August, 2010 but was fostered by her owners until Jan, 2011, when she was transported from Savannah to Atlanta.  Maggie was a sweet girl who had gone through too much in the year prior to her surrender.  She lost her doting and devoted owner last year and was transported from California to Georgia to be cared for by family members.  Maggie wasn’t  exactly welcomed by the existing dog in their home, the family ultimately came to the difficult decision that Maggie would be happier in another home.  With much emotion, Maggie was surrendered to GEBR.

Maggie has been living in her foster home since Feb, 2011 with foster mom,  Jessica and foster brother, Hugh.  Maggie was devoted to Jessica and was very very happy.

We take comfort in the fact that Maggie is back with her devoted Daddy at the Rainbow Bridge.

Very early this morning, I got a call from a wonderful woman who was on her way to Ringgold, GA to pick up 30 dogs for transport to the north. She made me aware that city officials in Ringgold were planning on euthanizing all the shelter dogs to make room for displaced dogs coming into the shelter, because of the recent devastating storms. She said, “there’s a bulldog at the shelter and if I could take him, she would be able to add one more dog on her transport north. All dogs were going to be put down TODAY.” After seeing a rather poor picture of this dog, I thought that he could possibly be a pure breed English Bulldog and agreed to accept him into the rescue. This all had to happen very quickly as the Ringgold shelter was indeed preparing to euthanize all the dogs they were housing. AND the transport would be leaving the shelter within the hour.

The transport dropped off a very scared dog, his shelter name was Vinny!!!!! This poor boy sat in the shelter as a stray for more than 5 weeks, lived through the devastation of Ringgold, GA and had been scheduled to be PTS in a matter of hours.

Vinny is now resting comfortably at our vets, in quarantine, after being in the shelter for so long. Although I was not able to touch him, he appears very docile and has the sweetest eyes. After a 2 week quarantine period, during which he will have a medical workup, we will be able to ascertain more information about his medical condition and personality. Vinny appears to be an English Bulldog Mix.

Update 5/18/11:

After 2 weeks in isolation, we had hoped that we would be able to bring Vinny to a foster home sometime this week.

He never developed any “shelter infections” fortunately. Unfortunately, Vinny arrived covered in ticks. About 60 were removed by hand, an additional 30 or so, fell off after he had Flea and tick medication applied…BUT….he is still covered in ticks. Poor baby has to wait until it is safe to give him another application. I went to play with him on his first day of freedom. He is very thin and literally covered in ticks or scabby areas from where ticks were removed. He is a sweet boy but wasn’t too interested in interacting with me, he was so thankful to be out of isolation and able to explore the vets property. He is very thin from his stay at animal control and is out of shape from being confined for more than 8 weeks. He seems to be a bit withdrawn, possibly depressed but who wouldn’t be after all he’s been through. Based on how he acted with me and the vet staff while we were together, he is a sweet sweet boy.

Vinny is definitely an Olde English Bulldog (EB/boxer mix). We’ll keep you updated on his progress.

Our family feels lucky to have had the priviledge of caring for Snort during the last 6 months, he made us laugh everyday.  We miss him,  it still hurts to come home and not have him greet us at the door.

Update 6/28/2011:  Bullett has been adopted by his foster family!

Meaty is a very sweet young man and enjoys his humans tremendously. He was raised with a toddler and 2 small dogs in the home.  He is in good health. No eye, ear or skin issues.

Once Meaty’s phenobarbital levels are stabilized and therapeutic, he will be able to safely undergo neuter.  His medication dosage has just been increased, we will be able to check the level in a few days.  Meaty has had no further seizures since the one last week.

Just a reminder: Anti seizure medications do not STOP seizures, they only control the number.  He may never have another seizure again, but he could have one next week.  Stable blood phenobarbital levels is the key in treatment of this disease.  Meaty will need to be on anti-seizure medication for the rest of his life and it must be given on a strict schedule.

Update 4/9/2011:  Meaty is on an increased dose of Phenobarbital and has not any seizures while in our care.

Update 7/22/2011:  Meaty found his “Furever” home with GEBR’s very own Stephanie!  Congratulations Meaty, Stephanie and Chunk!

 

Update 4/9/2011:  Boudreaux is Heartworm negative and has been neutered.   He is now in his foster home where he resides with a female English Bulldog and a male French Bulldog.

Update 6/4/11: Bou has been adopted! 

Update 4/20/12:  Bou is back!  The person that adopted him last June is moving out of state and can not take Bou with him. 

The good news is, he is still happy and healthy!  He is up to date on his shots, neutered, likes other dogs, does not seem to mind cats, and likes kids (except for newborns, he is not sure what do to with them).  He is settling in nicely at his foster home with his foster sister. 

Update 5/10/12: Bou has found his final forever home.  We are so happy for him Jessica and Frankie!

Because of family issues, her most recent owners found it necessary to re-home Zora.

Zora is a sweet, laid back girl.  No major health issues that we are aware of at this time.

She is now UTD on vaccines.  She will be undergoing spay and dental cleaning within the week.

Update  04/09/11:

Yappy Hour was great fun.   A BIG “Thank you” goes out to East Andrews and everyone who came out to support the rescue.

Daphne is sweet and docile.  No indication that she is dog aggressive and although interested in cats, did not lunge at the resident cat at the vet’s office.  She and Shorty got along well, although we did have to use care because Shorty was still intact and we aren’t sure if Daphne has been spayed.  She looks a little puffy in the hiney, so may be about to go into heat.  Daphne will be spayed ASAP!

Daphne is UTD on shots and heartworm negative.  She must stay in quarantine for 2 weeks before she is available for adoption, during that time she will be spayed.

Sorry that several of the better photos are of Daphne are behind bars, this was the only time she was even marginally still…she was so excited after getting lots of attention on arrival to our vet.

Update 5/2/2011:

Daphne has been adopted.  Way to go Daphne!

Shorty is “short”, compact and very, very cute!!  He will be a Velcro dog to his new owners as he loves, loves, loves human interaction.  He got along well with Daphne on transport and showed no signs of dog aggression when we got to the vet.

Shorty is UTD on shots, heartworm negative and appears otherwise healthy.  He will have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine before he is available for adoption.  During quarantine he will undergo neuter.

Update 3/20/11:

I was at the Vet’s office yesterday and got to spend some time with Shorty.  This handsome Bully has a fantastic personality! He absolutely loves attention and knows how to melt hearts with just a look….if we didn’t have six of our own we would snatch him up.   :^D
